The** Tandem Books** are decodable reading books for use alongside the Phonics for SEN and other systematic, synthetic phonics and linguistic phonics programmes.

The text in the books is carefully selected to reflect the sounds (and sound spellings) that the pupil(s) have worked on in class so that they are able to use their developing decoding skills and increasing phonic knowledge to read the words with accuracy. The Tandem Books are designed to be the shared with an adult with each being able to take part by reading out loud.

There are seven books for you to print out, covering the sounds:
Set 1: s a t p,
Set 2: i m n d,
Set 3: g o c k,
Set 4: e u r,
Set 5: h b f l,
Set 6: j v w x,
Set 7: y z.

These correspond to the sounds in the 7 sets covered in Book 1 of the Phonics for SEN programme.

Each book contains a simple story with illustrations. There are two versions of the story in each book, one for the child and one for an adult. On one side of the page is a version of the story for the adult to read, containing appropriate language structure and vocabulary. On the other side of the page is a version for the child to read - simplified and decodable.

There are two alternatives available:

  1. Capitalisation of names only, no punctuation – for children who need to focus on lowercase letters and work on blending for pupils with complex needs.
  2. Full capitalisation and punctuation included – for the majority of children, including those with SEN.

Great to read in class or send home. Easy to print out and replace if lost.
