Teaching directions and parts of a compass can be engaging and fun with this mini-unit comprised of student notes and five map and labeling activities for mid to upper- elementary students! Allow students to work in pairs or individually and use the “Which Direction?” labeling activity as a quiz or timed game. In addition to these writing activities, give students opportunities to give verbal directions so they become even more comfortable using directional words. Modify each of these activities as necessary depending on their age and learning level. Don’t forget to download and print your full-color compass directions classroom poster!
