Technology in the Classroom Ask an Expert about Ancient Cultures:

Website forums allow students to e-mail their questions to experts and receive a response within days. This type of person to person correspondence allows for to students to discover how Professional study is conducted in a variety of field , to gain new insights into a subject to receive the most up to date information, and to get clarification on abstract or difficult concepts.

Time:
This assignment will take one or two class periods.

Task:
Formulate questions for online experts

Purpose:

To gain more in depth knowledge of ancient cultures

Directions:
1. Identify areas of interest in ancient cultures. Topics may (but are not limited to…)
a. Indo-European language families
b. The Aryan Caste System
c. The Origins and diffusion of Hinduism or Buddhism,
d. Judaism and the Kingdom of Israel
e. Similarities and differences among Hinduism, Buddhism and Judaism

2. Use online forums and submit 1-2 questions- asking for clarification, in-depth information, or information on your topic of importance and why it is relevant today.

3. Create an “ask the Expert” bulletin board in the classroom where you can post your questions and the responses you have received.


Technology tips:
A. You can use keywords such as “Buddhism online forum” as a starting place

B. Typing, “Ask an Expert” into a search engine will generate a list of sites. Many of these are designed for K-12 Students
C. The Virtual Reference Desk (VRD) sponsored by the United States Department of Education is a good resource. Digital reference, or Ask A (Short for “as a librarian”) service, assist users in location information using library resources. Here you can learn about VDR through a Web site called the Librarian’s index to the Internet

D. Local Libraries often have virtual reference desks. Here you should look for links on the local library homepage. My Web Librarian is one name to look for
