The Arab of the Future 2
This graphic novel describes life in Syria from 1984-1985. A little boy, Riad, and his family move from France to Syria. Riad’s mom is horrified by the Syrian culture, so different from her own in France. She and her husband, a Syrian, are at odds by the upbringing her son is receiving. Yet she has hope life will change when her husband builds the villa he claims he will build throughout the story.

Students will use comprehension reading strategies as they analyze the events and beliefs that are portrayed in this book, particularly “reactions” the readers have, stating evidence from the book. Students will learn about Syrian life under the dictatorship of Hafez Al-Assad. They will consistently compare/contrast their young lives with that of Riad, the child, the main character in the story.

For post-reading activities, students will choose one reading activity to share with others.
