Want to develop a strong understanding of division and equal sharing through a redistribution math read-aloud? This lesson supports the reading of the Maths picture book ‘The Doorbell Rang’ by Pat Hutchins. The lesson is designed with EYFS in mind - so beneath the lesson input part of the plan you will find 4 activity task ideas to set up for guided play and exploration.

A fun, practical fusion of reading comprehension and Maths, the children will be super engaged with these hands-on and practical equal sharing investigations. A fun way to introduce division; this lesson includes supporting resources found in most early learning classrooms (see below for details).

This pack contains:

  • Detailed Maths lesson plan
  • Key Comprehension Questions for read-aloud
  • Recording sheets for one of the tasks
  • Chocolate chip cookie templates
  • Chocolate chip-less cookie templates

Additional resources needed:

  • The book ‘The Doorbell Rang’ by Pat Hutchins (FYI there are YouTube readings if budget is low!)
  • Tuff tray, playdough, playdough tools and cookie cutters (Task 1)
  • Paper plates (Input & Task 2)
  • Trays, bowls, tweezers, pompoms, number cards, whiteboards & pens (Task 3)
  • A small bowl of chocolate chips per pair OR small pieces of brown lego OR brown paint and brushes (Task 4)
