This is a set of print-and-use worksheets, activities, handouts and presentation-mode PDFs for J. R. R. Tolkien’s iconic fantasy children’s novel The Hobbit, and more specifically for Chapter 5 - Riddles in the Dark.

This comprehensive teaching unit includes the following:

  1. Comprehension & Close Reading Questions for Chapter 5 - Riddles in the Dark.

  2. Read & Respond Journal Questions for Chapter 5 - Riddles in the Dark.

  3. Analyzing Quotes / Important Passages from Chapters Chapter 5 - Riddles in the Dark.

  4. Alternative Comprehension Check Activity: This is a cloze text summary of the chapter, designed as an alternative comprehension check, or as a way to differentiate (the cloze activity is easier than the comprehension questions or close reading activities).

  5. Class Riddle Competition: This is a fun activity in which students get a chance to develop and create their own riddles. You can then use them to stage a riddle competition within the class.

  6. TEACHER’S GUIDE + PRESENTATION (a set of slides for use in class or in a video conference) is included. Perfect for DISTANCE LEARNING, this includes

  7. MODEL ANSWERS for the comprehension & close reading questions as well as slides for teaching the lesson. NO PREP NEEDED!

  8. I’ve also included a DETAILED SUMMARY & ANALYSIS of Chapter 5 as further guidance for teachers, especially useful for those teaching* The Hobbit *for the first time, or in a homeschooling, DISTANCE LEARNING setting.

NB: I’ve included a range of different (and differentiated) activities so that you can choose what best suits your class of students, and depending on how much in-depth analysis you would like to go into for each chapter. I usually read The Hobbit with Grade 7 students, but this unit of work can naturally be used with Grade 6 or Grade 8 students as well!

Enjoy, and please leave feedback!
