In this playlist, students explore standard RL.8.3. They will analyze how particular lines of dialogue or incidents in a story or drama propel the action, reveal aspects of a character, or provoke a decision. Students look at examples of authors’ development of dialogue and incidents and are guided through identifying key details using various strategies. Students also have the option to listen to instructional audio and complete practice quizzes or activities.

The playlist includes:

• 2 links to practice quizzes or activities
• 1 assessment that includes five multiple choice questions
• Definitions of key terms, such as direct characterization and incident
• Examples of how to identify and analyze key details
