The Wizard of Oz Film Viewing Guide (U.S. History)
The Wizard of Oz Film Viewing Guide (U.S. History)
Although many of your students have probably watched the Wizard of Oz, it will be even more entertaining once they learn about the historical symbolic meanings of this classic film. For example, many people believe that the characters and events relate to the turn of the century events such as populism and the Industrial Revolution. It has been suggested that the Tin Man represents the industrial leaders (without a heart) and the lion represents Williams Jennings Bryan. As your students watch the Wizard of Oz in class or at home, they take notes on the film guide included. Students are to guess what the events, characters and objects represent in history. It is suggested that you give this assignment after you have taught the Industrial Revolution. After the film review the power point. The presentation begins with a short review of the populist movement and then gives an analysis of what many of the events, characters and objects may symbolize. Your students will love this activity!
