We find the word Jerusalem mostly without Yod. But according to the reading tradition, it should be read as Yerushalayim. The name of the city is first mentioned in Genesis -- 14-18 by the name Shalem. Many scholars believe that the name is based on two elements: Yeru -- to establish and Shalem (salem) -- a name of a Canaanite god. Genesis 14:18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
