Why we think this pack is useful:
We are pleased to provide a spelling pack to support vocabulary understanding for the Words Their Way spelling program. This pack contains crosswords and word searches for all 1-60 spelling lists in the Derivational Relations stage of the Words Their Way spelling program.
We found that at this stage, students are learning more sophisticated words and therefore it is important that they understand the word meanings, along with how to spell them. This pack aims to develop this understanding by encouraging students to use vocabulary clues to complete the crosswords. These crosswords and word searches relate to the Derivational Relations second edition book (blue book, second edition, published in 2009). In addition, we have also included a word search as an additional spelling activity in this pack for each spelling list. Packs contain US and UK spelling crosswords and word searches and answer sheets.
How we use this pack in the classroom:
We find these packs work well for literacy rotations. Often we used a timer to see how many words could be found in 10 minutes and then students spend another 5-10 minutes after this sorting the words by spelling pattern in their spelling books (especially as spelling sorts are such a key component for Words Their Way). Students really enjoyed the challenge and competitive element of seeing how many words could be found and sorted in a set time period.
We found that it was hard to fit all 24 spelling words into one crossword, so instead we split each spelling list up into two crosswords with a sort a and sort b. So for example, in the attached pack, we have arranged the 24 spelling words for sort 32, into sort 32a (first 12 words) and sort 32b (second 12 words), so that all 24 spelling words are covered in the two crosswords. Early finishers could move on to crossword b, once they waited for others to finish crossword a or you could split these crosswords over two days of spelling activities. So potentially with the two crosswords for each spelling list and the word search, you have three days of spelling activities for your classroom.

We have struggled to find websites that would generate crosswords without errors but their product works well.
