Children pick an item from the 'shop' and pick only one coin to pay for it. They use a number line to work out the change. Example main input questions given (can be copied into SMART or Promethean. Three differentiated worksheets with higher children using larger coins and more expensive items. Filled number lines for LA 1-20 provided to calculate on if needed; use 1-50 number lines (not provided here) to write on for middle ability children if they are struggling . Extension is also provided where children add own items or write a word problem for a friend. A good lesson that combines money and subtraction without being too complicated. Lesson plan provided. You could use toy money and label real items to make it more fun, but harder to manage.
