TES CTO excited to share news of new back-up tool for authors

Clifton Cunningham, chief technology officer at TES, announced this week that his team have developed a new application to allow authors to save their TES resources locally.

We'd highly recommend you read Clifton's original post, which explains the thinking, technology and insight behind the tool. 

For any technophobes out there, we've tried to tackle the main questions you might have below, but do let us know if you have any other queries or feedback.

What is it?

Put simply, it's a tool that can download your TES content directly from the resource page – titles, descriptions, files and all – so that you can save it to your computer. 

It runs as a simple application from your desktop. Please be assured that the tool will never store usernames, passwords or any other details, and that at no point does any of this information flow back to TES.

Why have we built it?

This application is the result of a monthly hack day session where the TES engineers try to find quick and creative solutions to help improve the way the site runs, outside the normal projects they work on. By spending time on ideas like this, we hope to make your lives easier, which is, of course, in our best interests.

The tool has been created as an open source application, meaning it is free for anyone to download and improve. We'd be delighted if you tried the tool and gave us your feedback on how it works or how we could develop it further. We're open to suggestions!

Why is it useful?

We recognise the time and effort teachers put into creating and publishing resources on TES, not just the files and content, but the detailed descriptions that accompany them on the page.

From this perspective, it seems natural to enable you to save your valuable resources pages as a whole. Don't worry, your resources and data are completely safe on TES - we're just aware that often authors like to keep track of and organise their content separately.

Our engineers may continue to work on the tool during hack days if the feedback from our community is that it is beneficial and there are directions you suggest we should take it in.

How do I use it?

You can download the application from this link. The steps should be relatively straightforward, but if you run into any problems do let us know!

What else is on the radar for the technology team?

There are always lots of on-going resources-related developments, but authors in particular will be thrilled to hear that dashboard improvements and your very own sale tool are on the way in the coming weeks and months.
