Design Technology Research and Design Project: Sandwich Boxes

Design Technology Research and Design Project: Sandwich Boxes

A four-lesson unit (although lesson 3 where the children create their boxes took two lessons!) to research, design, create and evaluate their sandwich boxes. The final box design itself is as the resource file picture shows, not triangular, but contains photographic steps for the children to follow. I used this lesson unit with a mixed Year 3/4 class (who got very into it), but have made these boxes with Year 5 before as well. This unit does not include actually making the sandwiches, but that could be included also.

Different Types of Houses - shapes and materials

Different Types of Houses - shapes and materials

This is a story that can be made into a book - it has 12 spreads. The tutorial talks in first person of a child, who introduces different types of houses across the world. Use this to initiate conversations about why we live where we live, why do some people choose to live on stilts, in tents, and in igloos? Talk about what they do during winter, summer and during the rain.

PORCH STORIES: "Where Is My Big Toe?"

PORCH STORIES: "Where Is My Big Toe?"

A Story is a Great Way to Engage Students. This story is an old one that was handed down through many generations, told usually while sitting on a front or back porch. The goal for this lesson is to allow students to discover the role language, math, history, science, and art have in storytelling and to get them to create their own stories using skills they learn in the classroom.
