NARRATIVE WRITING: TIGHTENING TENSION

Quite often when students write, they 'let the cat out of the bag' and give away the plot too quickly. This mini writing unit models how to build suspense by tightening tension in a narrative to make details more vivid and interesting. This technique can be applied to both personal and fictional narratives. WHAT’S INCLUDED: ✓ A Cover Page featuring a quote. Use this if you are compiling all sheets in this unit into a booklet.✓ Sample personal narrative, ‘Water, water – Everywhere’ featuring figurative language devices to build suspense and tighten tension.✓ 21 constructive questions to analyse the text for meaning, figurative devices and language style. Answer key included.✓ One page cut and paste activity to focus on sequencing events via a short sample text.✓ Identifying tightening tension via a movie extract.
