Template for Picture Blockbusters

Template for Picture Blockbusters

Here is a Blockbusters template for PowerPoint, easily adaptable. The concept is simple. You fill the boxes with questions or anything else (in MFL, you can use english sentences to translate) and if the pupils answer correctly you click on the box and it disappears. I used for this template images from around the world so the pupils can discover a new country every time.

Who wants to be a Millionaire?

Who wants to be a Millionaire?

Great game, to revise pretty much any topic! I used it to revise the past tense with 'avoir' and -ER verbs with my Year 8, but it can be adapted for any purpose. Switch off the lights, let the suspense penetrate the classroom and get the kids in a competitive mood! They'll love it...

Jeux Olympiques

Jeux Olympiques

A lesson using CLIL (content language integrated learning) to teach about the Olympics in French. I used this to build upon a previous lesson (conducted in English) where we had learnt about the history of the Olympics as part of our Greeks topic. That had dealt with the first olympics in 776BC until they stopped around 1,000 years later. This lesson deals with how a Frenchman resurrected the Olympics in 1896. It briefly recaps the history in English then continues in French. We finish with a prediction game to practice sporting vocab. A bit complicated but I hope it makes sense!

Year 7 Learning through Singing

Year 7 Learning through Singing

My Year 7 class is low ability - I have managed to come up with a song for most of the units we cover in Year 7. They have managed to learn this medley of songs off by heart and sing it every lesson to warm up - it's great to do while you're setting up the class - handing out books, register etc. They have no visual prompts and they love doing it! I&'m sending a copy of the recording home to them to show their parents at the end of the year!

France - quiz

France - quiz

This PowerPoint activity is for Years 7-9 which have France as the country they will represent on Sports Day. They will be doing a range of activities in form time, including this quiz, learning about one specific aspect of cultural interest, doing an introduction into the language ( they don't all learn France, listening to the national anthem and perhaps trying to learn a couple of chants. We have 11 form entry so 3 forms have France (Y7,8,9) and there are 10 other countries. Could be useful for the World Cup.

The subjunctive through song

The subjunctive through song

Geared for Year 10, intermediate (B1) French students. This activity works with the song "Je t'oublierai" by Isabelle Boulay, a French-Canadian singer. The activity doesn't include her biography but you could certainly expand it to include a paragraph about her. After having been introduced to the forms and usage of the subjunctive, this activity shows them an authentic use of the subjunctive, with several examples throughout the song. Here I propose a warmup to be done at home or in class in groups which is the bulk of the activity and which includes interpretation of the lyrics, recognition of the subjunctive, and some hypothesis building. Next students hear the song and report if their hypotheses about the song's genre and speed/rhythm were correct. If you have any corrections/enhancements, I'd love to hear about them! Bon subjonctif!

Greetings Triangles

Greetings Triangles

A starter or consolidation exercise for KS2 or KS3. Cut them up and see if they can reassemble the square by putting the pieces together correctly. If you want to make it easier, tippex out the words around the edge, as they’re red herrings.

Quiz - Paris ou Londres?

Quiz - Paris ou Londres?

A 20 minute quiz. Pupils are shown pictures and asked C’est Paris ou c’est Londres? I’ve added answer slides in French which can be used to encourage target language and generate more team points. Postscript... when I made this I used the 'greater&' populations; since then, the EU has redefined major city populations using a Larger Urban Zone figure. (People are paid to make this up. No, really.) Anyway, the LUZ figure for London is 11.9m and Paris is 11.5m. In terms of square Km Paris is a third larger than London, but with a lower pop. density. You read it here first. x
