THE 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL SENT ON A 'DAY-TRIP' TO AUSTRALIA

THE 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL SENT ON A 'DAY-TRIP' TO AUSTRALIA

This was an article originally found on the BBC, however, I have edited and changed the text a little to make it easier for non-native English speakers. I have added footnotes with the French translations. You could easily edit this to change to the appropriate language or simply delete the footnotes. This is accompanied by comprehension questions and a true or false activity that I created to check understanding of the article. This also goes with a flipchart I created on the early history of Australia which can be purchased on my page. My students really enjoyed reading this text as they were curious about the plight of Pamela and felt really sorry for her and what she, along with other unfortunate children, had to go through. Any feedback regarding how I have created the questions would be great!

A basic guide to The Commonwealth (2018)

A basic guide to The Commonwealth (2018)

This is an introduction to The Commonwealth. It was originally created for middle school students in France with a level of approxinately B1. So I have purposely made the language quite simple. It has been updated for 2018: with the inclusion of The Gambia returning after leaving and the news that Prince Charles will be taking over The Queen as head (when she dies). I have created a Powerpoint for the teacher to be shown on the overhead projector, one to be printed out to give to the students with fewer slides (optional). I usually choose the option 4 slides per page when printing, so I don’t print out too many pages. There is also an activity to answer questions on the powerpoint which could be started in class then finished for homework, then a class test to be done on a different day. If you prefer you can skip the **each one, teach one **activity.

Easter Go Fish Card Game (have/have got)

Easter Go Fish Card Game (have/have got)

A card game to practice Easter vocabulary and have/have got in their various forms. To play: Divide students into groups of 4 or so and deal 4-5 cards each. The rest go in the middle and make the pond /pool/. On his turn, a player asks someone for a card (Have you got…? or Do you have…?) in order to get 4 of a kind (or 6, depending on how many cards you make). If the player has the card, he must hand it over and the player whose turn it is can ask anyone for another card. If the answer is negative, the player is told to go fish and to take a card from the pond and the next person asks for a card. When a player has 4 (or 6) of a kind, he sets them on the table and plays again. Continue until all the cards run out (all the cards have been grouped together into families according to their picture). The winner is the person with the most families. This worksheet contains two of each picture, so I would suggest printing it two or three times to form a set where students can get 4 or 6 of a kind. Enjoy!

EAL New Arrivals: Scheme of Work and Resource Pack

EAL New Arrivals: Scheme of Work and Resource Pack

This book will serve as a short course for new EAL (English as an Additional Language) students who may have recently arrived in Primary or Secondary school and who may have limited or no English. Currently in Education, many schools have significant numbers of students arriving each year with limited English skills and therefore little no access to the school curriculum. Formal EAL departments and training in schools has slowly diminished in recent years and often there is no clear course or structure in how to ingratiate these students into the school and offer appropriate support. Teachers are often at a loss when it comes to providing work for these students and the students themselves can be very limited in their ability to progress. Very often there is a lack of specialist EAL teachers or support workers in schools and so this book would offer an easy to teach method for different members of staff in a school. This book could be used over a 6-7 week course, therefore could be ideal introduction for the EAL student’s first half term in a school. It will include weekly themes that mix the acquiring of English language grammar and vocabulary, improving reading, writing and oral skills and learning common and useful element of English to improve their daily life in school and in the community.

Reading comprehension activities: Easter Story - CHARACTERS OF THE CROSS

Reading comprehension activities: Easter Story - CHARACTERS OF THE CROSS

This reading activity pack tells the story of the Jesus’ death and resurrection from Palm Sunday through to Easter Sunday. It is ideal all year round for reading or Religious Studies, but is particularly useful in the run up to Easter, as they follow the last week in Jesus’ life. They can also be used as Sunday School activities or as readings in church. Based on the gospel accounts in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, I have written five reports from key people in the Easter story about what happened with comprehension based questions and answers for each. These will bring the well-known story of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection to your students in a fresh, engaging and enlightening way. The characters featured are: Peter Pontius Pilate A Roman soldier Mary Magdalen Cleopas The comprehension questions tackle the following skills: Literal and retrieval Word meaning Inference and deduction There is also an activity at the end to summarise each of the characters stories. All activities are aligned to the common core. As an added extra, there are a number of posters with key bible verses for your displays, including posters to colour in. These can be found at the end of the reading pack. A bit about me: Before teaching, I was a journalist. I still work as a freelance writer, and like nothing more than writing engaging texts to challenge and inspire children and young people. I choose subjects that may not be on the curriculum but are still of great importance for students to know about. Everything I write has been comprehensively researched from a number of sources and been written by myself. No plagiarism here! This is all original material. My questions are pitched at a high level, but with a bit of patience and persistence (and some adult help if necessary) most students will have great fun as they learn, especially as the penny drops. I am aware of the impact of printed resources on our environment so try to condense my reading activities into as compact a space as possible. Hopefully this will help you save time in printing, and keep the bills down! Check out my store if you enjoy this – you’re sure to find more. Thanks! While you are here… You may also be interested in a similar pack of reading comprehensions I have written about the birth of Jesus. Follow the link for more: Stories from the Stable
