Advanced French Reading & Writing: Childéric I, Roi Des Francs (Livre Premier)

The story of the beloved Merovingian king Childéric I (440-481) was preserved by the druidic Bards of old France and is here retold in a flowing, pleasant style by Madame de Beaufort d’Hautpoul (1763-1837), a renowned woman of letters who was at the heart of Parisian literary society during the reign of Louis XVI. For educational purposes, this description of Childéric’s early years has been divided into two-page segments that are easy to read. Advanced French students are sure to enjoy this poetic and quick-paced historical tale. The language has been updated, though the original, distinctive style remains intact. Simple grammar review, translation, ‘résumé de texte’ and creative writing assignments follow each section alternately. Summary Childéric is the young and intrepid son of King Merovée and his beloved wife, Aboflède, around the year 430CE. Childéric lives happily with his loving parents and is beginning his education with druids, when he is tempted to join his father’s army in a battle against Attila the Hun. Despite being guarded by his king’s most valiant friend, Viomade, Childéric goes missing amidst the turmoil of the conflict. The faithful Viomade wishes to know what the boy’s fate truly was, and goes off with the king’s blessing in search of the young prince. Despite treachery by Draguta, a fellow follower of the king, Viomade finally finds Childéric, who has been cared for in the wilderness by an elderly Hun named Gelimer. Gelimer had lost his family and status, and was inspired to renounce his life as a warrior in order to devote his final years to raising the young boy he found on a battlefield. The old blind man loves Childéric devotedly and does not know that he is heir to a throne. After Gelimer’s death, Childéric returns to France with Viomade where a traitor is about to be crowned king. It was presumed, due to their lengthy absence, that Childéric and Viomade had been lost forever. Just in time, the young prince is reunited with his father and fulfills the hopes of all Francs as the rightful heir to the throne.

There are some fun questions and weird facts about the period to lighten the topic a little. This quiz should only take about 5-8 minutes but it can be a good starter at the beginning of the lesson or it could be used to sum up the topic before moving on to The Bronze Age. fun activity for devevloping enquiry skills and drawing inferences including data collection sheet

Aimed at KS2 and KS3 I developed this activity into a plan that can be easily adapted. It works as a useful introduction to a History topic and allows pupils to start focusing on the type of questions they should be asking as they progress and how to effectively find the answers they need. It can be scaled easily by changing the nature of the objects (more complex) or even the number of them. I used a bunch of keys with this once and it turned into a full on Sherlock Holmes detective mystery!

Developing chronological knowledge and understanding: Britain before the Romans

A set of linked resources and activities to help students improve their understanding of the sequencing of events. This set covers Britain before the Romans, c4500BC-43AD There is a specially designed power point presentation of 25 selected events. This is designed to convey a sense of the passage of time by having the transition between slides vary in length depending on how many years actually passed between events. Each slide has a date, event and appropriate illustration. (Each event slide is on show for five seconds and the whole presentation lasts for approximately five minutes). As a bonus there is also a ‘click through’ version of the slide show. The selection of events is not meant to be definitive for the study of that period (it’s a selection not a comprehensive timeline!) – this allows for an extra activity/challenge of students deciding what is missing/what could be left out. The same events are on a word document with a classifying task -to help students identify links within a period. Some of these events are also used for a set of sorting challenges (by focussing on the same set of events in different ways it will help boost students’ knowledge). The first involves sorting set of four different events into the correct order – available on power point and word document. The second is a set of printable ‘cards’ which can be used for sorting or matching tasks (such as the matching pairs game) – each event is on a separate ‘card’ from its date (organised in sets of 10). The third is a set of ‘domino cards’ where each card has an event and a date that links to another event -so making a single sequence of 10 events.
