Opium Wars' Impact - 20 page lesson pack

This is one of my most detailed lessons and one which students love. After a quick starter activity about the significance of the poppy in British-Chinese relations the class read detailed background notes before being issued one of 23 character cards. These range from tea-magnate Thomas Twining to Confucius! In role the students then extract evidence which their character might use to explain how China became to be ruled by foreigners after the Opium Wars. I always follow this up with either a piece of extended writing or even better a debate. Please watch the short video clip attached to see this lesson in action. End of Term History Lesson

A fun and creative history project lesson for students in the last week of term. Could be used for activities week in Humanities or just as a reward lesson the last time you see your class for the summer. Very easy to set up - you will just need a few balloons, string, sellotape, felt tips and a bag of old clothes. The students work in small groups to research and recreate a famous historical figure (info sheets and clip tasks included - all instructions on Powerpoint). The lesson can last as long as you want it to, and I gave prizes of sweets at the end for the best one - but that’s optional! My students really enjoyed it and we took pictures at the end for the school website. Hopefully yours will love it too. I’m going to be adding lots more free History lessons over the coming months. Please use this mat as a revision game to play in groups in the classroom. This should be printed on A3 paper and laminated so that it can be re-used. This means that students can write their initials on their square instead of using counters. The way the game is played can be manipulated. However, the main instructions are as follows (also included on sheet): This is to be played in groups. Each student has a counter. They roll a dice and move that number of places. They then have to tell or explain to the others in their group about that topic. If they manage 15 seconds, they get 1 points. If they manage 25 seconds, they get 2 points. If they get 35 or more seconds, they get 3 points. Please use a great revision resource for group work. Please also leave any feedback for future revision resources and how to improve them.

Card Sort Source Analysis - Was Robespierre a hero or villain?

This innovative and creative activity has been carefully designed to help students assess the role played by the revolutionary leader Robespierre during the period known as the Reign of Terror in the French Revolution. This activity involves giving students ten primary sources and four secondary sources written by historians and sorting them under the headings of hero or villain. Once this has been complete, students can then have a go at answering the question: How far was Robespierre a hero who saved the revolution or a villain who betrayed his own values to take control of France?’ I would recommend that this resource should be used with either a core or advanced group as there is a lot of reading, which would be too much for a foundation group with low literacy skills. If you are looking for something a little easier, I have made a another simpler card sort which just looks at the facts. This can be bought separately. This resource makes a great starter or plenary to completed in pairs or groups. It can be cut up the students or placed into envelopes for use with several classes or even set as a piece of homework. Alternatively, your students could draw a table with the two headings ‘hero’ or ‘villain’ and list the sources under them. The aims and objectives are: Theme: The reign of Terror Know: What sort of man was Robespierre? Understand: Why are historical events interpreted in different ways?
