New AQA GCSE The Heart and Blood Vessels (2 lessons)

New AQA GCSE The Heart and Blood Vessels (2 lessons)

A lesson used between years 8-11 on the heart and blood vessels. I do double lessons in Science but it can easily be put into two. For the heart lesson, I usually do a heart dissection instead of the video and questions and get students to create a write up of the practical including: what parts they identified and how they minimized any risks during the practical. Lot of activities included with differentiation and extension questions.

Quiz questions project

Quiz questions project

This resource is best used for students aged 11-18 as it is a generic template and strategy based on the value of questions and questioning. It is useful due to this. The aim is to prepare a quiz based presentation to share with others or use as a revision resource. The objectives to be fulfilled by the end of this project are; a development in the ability to devise, answer and evaluate key questions. Differentiation is by outcome or teacher selection so, for example, only the most able students are given the trickier tasks or given the role of leadership. Questions are a great learning tool, they have the potential to boost thinking, independent learning, retention, teamwork, collaboration and communication like no other strategy. Teachtoday July 2018

Antibiotics

Antibiotics

An engaging lesson presentation and associated worksheet that looks at the use of antibiotics to treat bacterial infections and the raises the issue of the potential over-use of these substances. The lesson begins by getting the students to recognise the difference between three key terms that begin with anti (antibiotics, antivirals, antiseptics). Students will be introduced to the idea that antibiotics are specific to a small range of bacteria and therefore the correct one has to be selected before being prescribed. Moving forwards, students will meet the idea of the zone of inhibition and will understand how the size of this zone can be used as an indicator to the effectiveness of the treatment. Students are shown how to calculate the size of the zone and then are tested on their ability to apply this mathemetical knowledge. Finally, time is taken to look at the links to the topic of natural selection to explain how some bacteria are resistant to certain antibiotics. There are regular progress checks throughout the lesson so that students can assess their understanding. This lesson has been designed for GCSE students but could be used as an introduction with A-level Biology students who are about to begin the topic of immunity.

Reflex arc & ruler drop practical lesson

Reflex arc & ruler drop practical lesson

This is preparation for the Reaction time required practical in AQA GCSE Trilogy. Slide 2 is a learning framework for the lesson. Slide 3 provides the key words for the lesson. Can simply be a visual aid to introduce the vocabulary. I tend to print this slide off for individuals in the class who would benefit from their own copy and for TAs. More able students use this as a basis for a mind map to make links between key words. Slide 4 is a picture diagram of a reflex arc. Slide 5 shows a simplified version of previous slide with questions to answer. Differentiate by number of examples given in Q4. Slide 6 is a fill in the gaps cloze. Slide 7 inserts the answers to slide 6. Slide 8 shows a synapse. Slide 9 gives details of each neurone. Slide 10 is a literacy activity. Slide 11 - instructions for a simple ruler drop test. This is a short practical so that students understand what to do for the Required practical next lesson. Slide 12 - Plenary Two sheets supplied one has the diagrams and the other has the questions and cloze. I include these simply because I find them useful for particular students with my mixed ability classes. If I know a particular student makes a meal of using glue, I will print directly onto labels for them. I keep a supply of 4 labels to a page for this purpose.
