New A level - reading activities - Médias - authentic articles - exam questions - edexcel

I selected authentic articles dealing with current affairs/issues in France following the A Level textbook (Edexcel) guidelines. In this booklet you will find 3 articles with an exam style questions for each article! As they are authentic, they are challenging and I use them mostly for homework asking students to search new vocabulary (vocabulary highlighted in yellow needs to be searched by students before having a go at answering questions) The answers are given, you will have to remove the “(v)” that shows where the correct answers are before printing this file for your students. There is also a box where they can write (in English or in French) facts they have learned from these articles (as this could be used for their speaking exams). Reading authentic articles will also train them for their IRP

Escape Room activity - French Revolution

Escape Room activity - French Revolution

This was a very low tech escape room activity. I printed off slides 1 (key words), slides 4-7 for students (2 slides per page!). The locations are on the final slide. I hid the first code cracker under a beret on an unused desk, the next clue under a guillotine by our fire exit and the third (pair of codes) under a toy crown on my classroom shelves. As I didn’t have a suitable box I could padlock, I used a cardboard wallet, holepunched it and put the padlocks through the holes on there. I used one padlock with a 3 digit code (187 - slide 8 for the questions) and a key padlock. On the wallet, I wrote in French that they had to prove to me they had complete all activities. I gave prizes to the students to open the padlock first. I did this with an able Y10 group (small class) and it took virtually a double lesson (100 minutes). Please message me if you have any questions.

PPT has 27 slides and covers two lessons with: 2 cultural starters Fact finder activity with worksheet (differentiated) and slides (to print out to display around the room) extension with a historical timeline to create. mini plenaries (short quiz, game, Q&A…) links to youtube videos: 1. historical fact recap (in English), 2. a fun song parody, 3. French TV of 14th July parade, 4. Extract of Les Miserables (English) and La vie en rose (French) a listening gapfill (teacher reading it out, differentiated worksheet) link to Studio 2 Vert (No screenshot due to copyright) This is probably more for lower set y9 or early KS3 due to the easy structures and input in English, but the videos are lighthearted to engage students.

Charlie Hebdo - liberté d'expression - authentic materials - MFL - FRENCH

Charlie Hebdo - liberté d'expression - authentic materials - MFL - FRENCH

This can make up a series of lessons about the Charlie Hebdo attacks of 2015 in Paris. More suited to KS4 and possible a more mature Year 9 group given the nature of the topic and the vocab used. The first few slides are a selection of starters using authentic materials that get pupils responding to images in a similar vain to the GCSE photocard. The lessons get pupils looking at current affairs but also looks at grammar, genuine quotes, and an article amongst other activities such as opinion lines. My classes really found this topic interesting but it also pushed them in terms of language, vocabulary and grammar. Alongside this Powerpoint I have also used the French Netflix documentary « Je suis Charlie » https://www.netflix.com/watch/80079253?trackId=13752289&tctx=0%2C1%2C491adc434dd06655319d9ea4a3625e6e22127a0d%3A5b75458081903e484cb2dc14579e901ead7c8d6c%2C%2C WARNING: not all of this documentary is suitable for showing to students so make yourself aware of the sections that ought to be skipped before pressing play! Obviously as this is on Netflix it requires a subscription and for it not to be blocked on the school IT system. Notes to teacher: SENSITIVE SUBJECT MATTER: Please look through all powerpoint and be aware of sensitive nature of this topic and be mindful of your classes potential response before using.
