This lesson is an ideal introduction to the world’s three main climate zones. It is part of Our World, a Geography unit designed for students in KS1 and lower KS2 (Y1-3), but can also be taught as a stand alone lesson. First the presentation helps students understand that different places in the world have different climates. It then looks at the location of the Equator and North/South poles, and how these relate to the three main climate zones. To keep things simple, these are referred to as hot (tropical), mild (temperate) and cold (frigid). The activity challenges students to locate the Equator and poles and then identify various climate zones around the world. It is differentiated two ways: Easier – Students identify the climate zone of 8 numbered points around the world. Harder – Students identify climate zone and continent of 8 numbered points around the world. This lesson is part of Exploring Brazil, a Geography unit designed for students in KS2 (Y4-6), but can also be taught as a stand alone lesson. The presentation introduces students to Brazil’s six main biomes including the tropical rainforest, caatinga (desert), Pantanal wetlands, cerrado (savannah) and Atlantic Forest. Students then read an information text to find out more. In the activity, students write an information text about Brazil’s ecosystems. This can either be done as a short activity or as an extended write in Literacy. (N.B. The activity sheets need to be enlarged to A3 size to provide adequate space for writing.) Short Activity: Easier – Students match statements to each ecosystem and write them in each box. Medium – Students add titles, then match statements to each ecosystem and write them in each box. Harder – Students add titles and write their own sentences about each ecosystem in the box. Extension – Students label the different ecosystems on the map, including drawings of animals found in each one. Extended Writing Activity: Easier – Students write an information text about Brazil’s ecosystems, including an introductory paragraph. This lesson is part of Tropical Rainforests, a Geography unit designed for students in KS2, but can also be taught as a stand alone lesson. All resources are compatible with both Microsoft Office and Google Workspace. The presentation introduces students to tropical rainforests, including some of the flora and fauna that live in them. Students then learn about the Earth’s tropical belt and the location of the various rainforests within it. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 1A: In this fourth lesson in the section we look at the effects of climate change around the world. We start with a quote from Great Thunberg and the pupils discuss whether they think she is right that we should be panicking about climate change and its impacts. We then look briefly at climate change impacts in the UK where the pupils will annotate a map of the UK using information from a video clip. We then look at the impacts worldwide, the pupils will be given an A3 sheet with a map surrounded by the impacts, they first locate the region the where the impact will be felt, rate the seriousness of the impact and then categorise each one as either social, economic, environmental or political. Using the information they have now gathered they write a response to Greta Thunberg’s quote using evidence from the lesson. We finish with a post-it plenary using a 2-mark question from the 2019 exam. This is a lesson used to address the demands of 3.1.1.6 case studies part of unit 3.1.1 Water and carbon cycles of the 2 year AQA geography A-level (7037). This lesson allows students to apply their understanding of the water cycle to a river catchment at a local scale (River Exe, Devon). The lesson starts by introducing the students to the River Exe and its characteristics using a group work activity where students have three attempts to match the data provided to the correct statement (answers included). Students then interpret a hydrograph showing the regime of the river Exe. Having read the information on pages 52/53 of the AQA geography textbook (Oxford), students then complete the template suggesting how each of the factors listed affect the water cycle in the River Exe catchment. To reinforce the students learning and place specific details of the case study there is a version of the activity know as quiz, quiz, change where the students are each given a statement with a question and answer on. They move around the room asking their question to their classmates. If answered correctly students swap statements if not the correct answer is read out before moving on.
