CPD: Retrieval Practice

Attached are two CPD sessions based around retrieval practice that I used to launch retrieval practice across our school. The first session discusses the theory of memory, based on the principles outlined in ‘Make Learning Stick’ and ‘Why dont students like school?’, including the forgetting curve, the difference between working memory/ long term memory and cognitive load theory. The second session discusses the main principles of retrieval practice based on Rosenshine and recent publications. The session also provides a range of examples of different retrieval activities. I have included the templates for these activities for you to share as well. Both sessions went down extremely well with staff, and helped develop retrieval practice on a whole school level. The resources could easily be adapted for a departmental level and also sharing with older students. Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you.

Continuous Provision Planning EYFS - With progression and challenge

This continuous provision planning suggests areas to be included in Nursery & Reception continuous provision & the resources to include - resources are progressive and levelled to encourage challenge. Planning also supports adult interactions by suggesting key skills & vocab to encourage/ model as the children play in each of the areas. The continuous provision plan is broken down into suggestions for High, Middle and Low Reception and High, Middle and Low Nursery - so that children of all abilities can be suitably challenged. This continuous provision planning was well received during an Ofsted visit in April 2023 as it showed how children were being challenged during child initiated time through continuous provision and adult interactions. Print This continuous provision planning on A3 and display the planning sheets in the areas of the classroom to support staff. The resources on continuous provision plan will remain constant throughout the year. All areas of the classroom can then be regularly enhanced when appropriate to match topics, interests or to encourage children to work here that do not usually. All resources in the continuous provision should be stored neatly. Children need to be supported in knowing how to tidy the continuous provision effectively with photos on boxes of where things go and a photo on the shelf to signal where each box goes. As well as this a photo of the area when it is tidy could be displayed.

Subject Leader Self Evaluation Form (SEF)Quick View

Subject Leader Self Evaluation Form (SEF)

(0)
As a subject leader, a subject self-evaluation is a process that allows you to assess the effectiveness of your subject area across a period of time (usually an academic year). It typically includes analysing any pupil performance data available, gathering feedback from students and staff, evaluating the effectiveness of teaching and the resources available, and reviewing the curriculum. A key part of the self-evaluation is understanding it’s not just recalling what happened but highlighting the impact that subject leadership has had. We’ve included two fully editable word document templates for you to self evaluate your subject area: Self-Evaluation Form – Concise: a shorter form for making a broader evaluation. This is less time consuming and more useful when you already have a good understanding of your subject area in your setting. It can also be used when your subject area doesn’t require rapid improvement and just needs less invasive monitoring to keep it on track. Self-Evaluation Form – In-Depth: a longer form that covers the Ofsted grade descriptors and allows you to make an in-depth judgement about the current status of your subject area in your school. This is useful if you want to get to know your subject well, if you know you need to make rapid changes or if you believe your school will be inspected and you want to use this to bolster your confidence and understanding. Our full subject leader pack includes this and so much more. Visit honeyguide-sls.co.uk for further information. How to Revise

(3)
Many, many years ago, my brother was at university and complained that he couldn't revise. back in the old days, before league tables, no one taught you how to revise and the results were generally not published. So no one had taught my brother, or me for that matter, how to revise. Being 7 years older and having been through university already, I write out a long letter and included loads of ideas about how to revise. from this letter a booklet was born. the letter was written in the early 90's and the first booklet was written in 2001. (That's how old I am!) This version was completed 2 years ago for the school where I currently work. The aim of this booklet is to make it more interesting to the kids. Revision is hard work and there are simpler ways to break the information down, but it involves effort and planning. I have also looked at the changes in attitude, diet and exercise that aids good revision! I was aiming at getting my brother off his Pot Noodle and Stella diet! I hope this is of use and please let me know if it is, AND if I need to improve certain bits! I am never happy with something and am always sure it can be improved!!

Good Practice when Teaching Maths

I was recently tasked with delivering a staff meeting about good practice when teaching Maths. It went down quite well with the other staff at my school so thought I'd upload my accompanying SMART on here. I covered concepts such as challenge, reasoning, real-life and practical opportunities etc. I was also able to point people in the direction of useful documents to aid with the planning and delivery of Maths, especially in relation to achieving greater depth. There is more on this in my blog post: http://www.missbritton.co.uk/tips-for-teaching-maths/

A fact sheet aimed at teachers, not students. There is no substitute for in depth subject knowledge, but there is often little time to develop it. This is a knowledge organiser for teachers, to be used as a spring board for planning. It contains everything you need to know about Earth and Space (up to GCSE-ish level), including common misconceptions and their related truths. Also includes child-friendly book recommendations.
