A computer game which simulates the process of selective breeding. Students compete to produce the largest and most impressive selectively bred crop. Instructions: Open the Excel file. Adjust the zoom so that all three panes are visible. The game contains 4 pre-loaded crops numbered 1-4. Enter a number (1, 2, 3 or 4) in the breed number input box above the first pane and a different number (1, 2, 3 or 4) in the breed number input box above the second pane. Press the grow button above the first and second panes. The two crops will grow. Now press the cross button above the third pane and a cross bred crop will be grown. Use the small triangular button above the third pane to move the tick box to the best plant produced by the cross breeding process. Click the add button and this crop will be stored as crop 5. The process can now be repeated but with a wider selection of crops to choose from (1 to 5). Successively larger and more impressive plants can be grown in this way with the student being responsible for which characteristics are favoured (height, colour, fruit size, flow size, etc.). In a process akin to meiosis, the students cut along the cut lines and swap the halves with a fellow student. The halves must fit together (like a jig-saw). The genotypes and phenotypes are then re-evaluated and significant variation emerges. In particular, recessive characteristics are highly likely, whereas recessive characteristics were never expressed on the original genomes. Note 3: A computer model containing all of the data behind the personalised genome activity sheets. The model also includes the model for the DNA fingerprinting activity. A computer game which simulates the process of selective breeding. Students compete to produce the largest and most impressive selectively bred crop. Instructions: Open the Excel file. Adjust the zoom so that all three panes are visible. The game contains 4 pre-loaded crops numbered 1-4. Enter a number (1, 2, 3 or 4) in the breed number input box above the first pane and a different number (1, 2, 3 or 4) in the breed number input box above the second pane. Press the grow button above the first and second panes. The two crops will grow. Now press the cross button above the third pane and a cross bred crop will be grown. Use the small triangular button above the third pane to move the tick box to the best plant produced by the cross breeding process. Click the add button and this crop will be stored as crop 5. The process can now be repeated but with a wider selection of crops to choose from (1 to 5). Successively larger and more impressive plants can be grown in this way with the student being responsible for which characteristics are favoured (height, colour, fruit size, flow size, etc.). Please follow these guidelines to use this resource: When opening, click "Enable content". Go to File - Options - Formulas and set calculation options to "Manual" and make sure the "Enable iterative calculation box" is checked.
