This resource includes 30 group discussion ideas for Functional Skills Speaking and Listening. Many of these are controversial and, as such, will need clear ground rules before the discussion starts. A set of resources to help students to prepare for the Functional Skills writing exam at both Level One and Two. The resource includes: x2 Spelling, punctuation and grammar related worksheets x 2 layout/presentation features worksheets x6 example writing tasks (email, letter, speech, leaflet, review and article) each with a layout and language checklist. The SPAG and layout pack works well as a classroom activity to help recap the key ideas needed for the exam. It could however, be set as a homework task. Equally, each of the six writing activities could be set as homework over a six week period to reinforce what has been taught in class. Both resources are currently available as PDFs.

Written in the style of the exams, the pack includes a planning space and space for for first and final drafts. Students could work independently in exam conditions or alternatively, the resource could be used as a classroom activity and the group could support each other through shared planning at the start of each task. This resource includes two Functional Skills reading documents on the subject of sugar and healthy eating. 12 questions follow the reading documents and support Level Two learners to explain the texts. The questions cover language features, presentation, comprehension and includes a comparison question. The reading could be done as group activity supported by a group discussion on the topic - which would make the resource accessible to L1 learners. Students can then tackle the questions independently to assess their understanding. As an extension activity, learners could complete the following writing task, available as a free resource:

A fully adaptable PPT for Functional Skills English Entry Three. This is lesson one in a series of 10 lessons for Entry Three writing. The resource covers punctuation and letter writing and includes learning objectives linked to the reformed 2019 Functional Skills. It includes: A punctuation starter Worksheets on full stops, commas, exclamation marks and question marks A formal letter layout activity A discussion task A formal letter writing task A proofreading task The resource contains enough work to cover x2 1.5 hour lessons. This resource can be used for a variety of English or Literacy sessions. Each fact/opinion should be printed on A4 sheets/separately. Students then sort each one as either a fact or opinion. I’ve run this in teams, against the clock, with students putting them into categories on the walls. A useful activity that can lead to discussions on why some opinions feel/look/sound like facts and bias. This resource is a PDF.

This Level One and Two Functional Skills resource (for Legacy specifications) focuses on the theme of Winter Solstice and festivals and traditions. Students are asked to research a festival in pairs to feedback to their group. As they feedback, the group must make some brief notes about each tradition, encouraging listening skills. This is then used to create a fact sheet. The final task asks students to create a presentation about a festival that is important to them. Both tasks could be used to formally assess elements of Speaking and Listening. Please note, although this resource was intended for Legacy specifications, it could be adapted to meet the needs of Reformed Functional Skills The resource includes: A starter A presentation to support the lesson A worksheet to support listening and note taking during the group discussion. A L2 presentation task Students will need access to IT to complete the research. This lesson is approx 2.5-3 hours long as time will needed to be given for the students to present at the end. The resources are in PDF format.

I created this resource to help my students understand what they were being asked in Pearson’s Functional Skills L2 reading exam. The pack concentrates on questions 2, 7, 8 and 10. This resource covers: meaning and context, language and presentation, identifying key points and comparing texts using quotes. Although it is structured to support the Pearson exam, it could be used to revise for FS L2 reading for any exam board. The resource is available as a PDF
