Many students with autism love predictability and routine. They feel calmer when they know: • What am I doing next? • How long will it last? • What can I do when I’m finished? • When can I do what I am really interested in? It’s brilliant to see that so many primary classrooms now have a whole-class visual schedule (either written or symbols + words) at the side of the interactive whiteboard. Temple Grandin has said that anxiety is the main emotion in autism. By using a simple schedule, we can help alleviate any school-routine-related anxiety. Autistic researcher and author, Temple Grandin, has written about how she ‘thinks in pictures’. When she hears a word, Ms Grandin’s brain works like Google Images to pull up ‘beautiful, precise pictures’. Many people with autism have a strong visual processing senses, and learn best when visual supports are used. In this video, we look at some quick ways of making whole-class lessons more visually appealing and thus more memorable and clear for our students with autism. We all need a little incentive to do difficult tasks, but the nature of the reward depends on personal taste - what rocks my boat probably won’t rock yours. Autistic speaker John Simpson has said, ‘nothing can motivate me like my special interest.’ In this video we look at realistic ways to encourage students with autism to do less-preferred tasks at school, often using a simple ‘first/then’ strategy. The key is to find what really motivates your students. Past student rewards have included: • 5 minutes googling washing machines • Printing out 5 pictures of favourite water bottles • Walking to the teachers car park to look at and record 5 licence plate numbers • Reading a favourite graphic novel for 5 minutes • Standing on the school landing looking at the cranes for 5 minutes Watch the full series in conjunction with Tes here
