Students research the periodic table using laptops (or information sheets) and fill in their sheet, then produce a leaflet on the periodic table and atomic structure. You can easily change the ‘demonstrate’ task at the bottom of the sheet or add another question. Created with OCR 21st Century Science Topic C2 (Chemical Patterns) in mind but would work for other specifications or could be easily adapted. (The preview is cropped but the actual document has borders!)

'Guess Who' worksheet for Y7 lesson on plant and animal cells. Students identify the organelle from a description of its function. Based on AQA Activate - B1, Cells - 1.2, Plant and Animal Cells (p16 of Activate 1 textbook). You could also ask students to identify which type of cell the organelle is present in, and offer an extension task to write a paragraph explaining the differences between plant and animal cell structure. I laminated and cut out the images/names/functions of different organs of the digestive system then asked students to assemble a whole digestive system with correct labels. I used this as a competition by splitting students into 2 teams, with the winners being the first to assemble all the images and labels correctly. I created this according to the AQA Trilogy GCSE specification but you could edit it to use keywords from other specifications e.g. duodenum. You could also use it with AQA Activate 2 (year 8).

A summary sheet for revising all sections of AQA GCSE Physics P1 - Conservation of Energy. Including Changes in Energy Stores, Conservation of Energy, Energy and Work, Gravitational Potential Energy Stores, Kinetic and Elastic Energy Stores, Energy Dissipation, Energy and Efficiency, Electrical Appliances and Energy & Power. Each box ties in with a double-page spread in the textbook. I used a 9-question diagnostic quiz to start the lesson, with a question for each box topic, and students started their revision with the areas they got wrong/were least confident in.

Lesson powerpoint and worksheet I created on how to predict the products of electrolysis of (aqueous) solutions. This was created for a low-mid ability Y10 group for AQA separate science GCSE, but is transferrable to all GCSE specifications that cover electrolysis. The challenge questions involve writing half-equations, which is a skill tested in the higher-tier exams, but you could choose a different challenge question if your group will be doing the foundation paper. I have added an additional worksheet where students identify the product left in solution, if applicable. You could also remove the lead bromide worked examples, or add more challenging compounds such as copper sulfate or sulfuric acid. This lesson was created using the TEEP cycle framework, as this is what my school uses (hence the TEEP indicators in the top left of each slide), but you can remove these if you want to. Template for students to construct their own plant life cycle. Images (all CC0, no attribution required & free for commercial use) are provided relating to an apple tree, for students to cut and stick to their template, or they could draw their own in the boxes provided. You could also give them only the images, and ask them to draw their own cycle. A completed cycle is included, either to review students’ order of events before they stick them in, as a scaffold to help students draw the events, or for if you only want students to annotate the diagram. Questions on pollination and seed dispersal are included. Designed with KS3 AQA Activate 1 in mind, but applicable to most KS3 schemes or could easily be edited to make it suitable for your own class/scheme.

C1/C2 (AQA) Taskmaster Challenge - Team Revision/Summary Game

A team challenge I created for my Y9 group at the end of C1 and C2, to recap both topics and to finish off the year. You could also use it at the start/middle of Y10 to recap what they have already done from GCSE. The challenges include making a model atom out of copper wire and mini marshmallows and modelling halogen displacement using lego bricks - you may wish to change these activities if you don’t have the resources to hand. The image I used in the corridor was a C1/C2 summary sheet (from TES). All images on the Element Zoo sheet are CC0 (free for commercial use, no attribution required). Enjoy!
