These lesson activities guide student to think critically about the choices that they make with respect to musical artists to listen, and further to interrogate the messages that they are receiving. Students are challenged to see song lyrics as a construct purposed reflect the artist's identity and to possible to convey a reflection on so social issue. After critical reflection on underlying ideas that they've inferred from existing songs, students are guided to be composers of powerful messages themselves using a unique format. Social Awareness: Analyzing Songs for Powerful Messages

These lesson plans and activities provided the framework for students to analyze songs for the powerful messages that are contained within the lyrics. As the students work in groups to analyze a variety of song lyrics, they will also be practicing the use of a variety of "Monitoring Comprehension" reading strategies (class anchor included). As well, students will have the opportunity to self and peer evaluate their participation and contribution during the group work stage using the attached evaluation form. After working in small groups and then sharing as a whole class...students will have the opportunity to create their own powerful messages for change through song lyrics. The final piece to this task is the "Scrammy" awards where students will be evaluated by you for their presentation of their final piece, but they will also be participating in the music awards with their peers.

This is a fun survey that you can use to get to know your students and how they feel about different areas of their home and school life. It is not writing intensive so all students will have access to share their thoughts. This unit is cross-curricular and involves drama & dance, social studies, Music Physical Education and language learning targets. Students explore the history of the contemporay dances as a lead in to an exploration of Capoeira as dance, as music, and as a martial art. I have instructed in my classroom looking at Capoeira as representation of "Rebellion against Oppression," and this is the framework that I use for Anti-Oppression critical understandings during Black History Month. This unit is interactive and has many facets that my students have enjoyed immensely. It can be modified of course to connect with your critical understandings that you are sharing in your class. This is the activity sheet and graphic organizer for a Classroom Casino. This a great activity where students get an opportunity to display what they've learned about Theoretical and Experimental Probability. Students really get the opportunity to use their probability knowledge in an authentic learning experience. My kids had a great time with their casino. I provided the games hosts with "money" and invited two other classes who each had money to spend. Afterwards, students are prompted to write a reflective journal.

This is part 2 that includes lessons 4 - 10 and the corresponding graphic organizers and resources. Students will continue their exploration of expectations in Language, Drama, and Art. This part of the unit has multiple opportunities for authentic assessments! If you reviewed or proceeded through Part 1 of this unit, then you are aware of the depth of learning that this unit is targeting. This second part of the unit extends that learning to explore social contexts, relationships, and media that impact personal identity. The Learning Objective of this unit is for students to explore their personal identities in a safe space and to think critically about how their identities are affected by external factors. In addition, through the sharing of ideas, students are also learning to recognize and appreciate the differences in the identities of others.

My students have enjoyed this activity as a precursor to formal debating. They have enjoyed the opportunity to have a persuasive conversation about someone that they find truly amazing! They take up the task of convincing their audience that their person is more amazing than the others that are proposed. This is a great opportunity for students to reflect on their own speaking performance and the speaking strategies used by their peers.

"Things that make you go hmm?" Song lyrics can be nonsensical, but they can also be powerful conduits to inspire social change...or at least social inquiry. Challenge the social awareness and critical consciousness of your students with this Music / Language Inquiry Unit. This Inquiry Unit contains 6 lessons and graphic organizers that create an opportunity for students to explore the many ways in which contemporary song lyrics impact our society by asking listeners to think about a variety of social issues. The culminating assessment is a choice matrix that differentiates the modes by which the students can creatively and meaningfully express what they've learned.

In this unit, students are guided to inquire on the idea of Growth Mindsets and how they impact their lives and goal setting experiences. This unit has 6 lessons with corresponding graphic organizers. There are a variety of opportunities for assessment provided throughout this mini-unit. My objective for all of our students is that there will be an observable change in the way that our young people see their ability to fulfill their own high expectations. My students love this classroom challenge. We explore a variety of biographies and current events! In addition we look at Time Magazine's Person of the Year and the qualities of the people that influence our world. This learning task involves a classroom challenge where students prepare persuasive media presentations in addition to biographies of their own candidates for Person of the Century. It's interesting to see some of their choices! Bieber was a tough sell for me...lol

This inquiry unit guides students through an exploration of the concept of "Happiness." Students will investigate through a variety of activities, their own conceptions of happiness, how it influences relationships with others and finally how it is measured on a global scale of sustainable well being. Within this unit, 12 lessons (some with multiple parts) are provided for you, using a 3 part framework and uniquely designed graphic organizers.
