This is a fun survey that you can use to get to know your students and how they feel about different areas of their home and school life. It is not writing intensive so all students will have access to share their thoughts. "Things that make you go hmm?" Song lyrics can be nonsensical, but they can also be powerful conduits to inspire social change...or at least social inquiry. Challenge the social awareness and critical consciousness of your students with this Music / Language Inquiry Unit. This Inquiry Unit contains 6 lessons and graphic organizers that create an opportunity for students to explore the many ways in which contemporary song lyrics impact our society by asking listeners to think about a variety of social issues. The culminating assessment is a choice matrix that differentiates the modes by which the students can creatively and meaningfully express what they've learned.

I drafted this graphic organizer as a reflective piece for my students after we'd completed the modules of our iM Project ("inspire myself) on Gender Equity. This reflective piece leads students through an analysis of stereotypes that they are exposed to in their environment. Students are guided toward a reflection of media that they analyze and a real hard look at how they honestly respond to stereotypes and the part that they will play in creating change. I feel that this reflection piece is important in teaching as we push towards generating learning experiences that are authentic and allow our students to transfer their knowledge and new understandings into their own environments where they can make real impacts.

I am very proud of this learning unit! It encompasses learning expectations for a variety of grades and curriculum areas including: History, Language, Geography, Mathematics, and Art. In this unit, I've designed a variety of learning that lead the students through the research and analysis of existing countries, the creation of their own world (where they emerge as world leaders), and finally culminating in the World Trade Simulation. This file contains the assignment sheet and description of learning tasks. As well, this documents contains teachers notes, graphic organizers for student tracking during the simulation and finally the trade resource templates required for use during the simulation. Please collect all the required files and enjoy! I'd love your feedback on this program as I have worked very hard and truly believe that this is an authentic learning experience for the kids that they will not forget!

This inquiry unit guides students through an exploration of the concept of "Happiness." Students will investigate through a variety of activities, their own conceptions of happiness, how it influences relationships with others and finally how it is measured on a global scale of sustainable well being. Within this unit, 12 lessons (some with multiple parts) are provided for you, using a 3 part framework and uniquely designed graphic organizers. Multiple opportunities for technological integration and assessment are provided throughout the unit in addition to literacy integration that extends from quotes to sundry engagements with media!

This is part 1 that includes the first 3 lessons in the unit. Students are challenged to see song lyrics as a construct purposed reflect the artist's identity and to possible to convey a reflection on so social issue. In this unit, students are guided to inquire on the idea of Growth Mindsets and how they impact their lives and goal setting experiences. These lesson plans and activities provided the framework for students to analyze songs for the powerful messages that are contained within the lyrics. As the students work in groups to analyze a variety of song lyrics, they will also be practicing the use of a variety of "Monitoring Comprehension" reading strategies (class anchor included). As well, students will have the opportunity to self and peer evaluate their participation and contribution during the group work stage using the attached evaluation form. After working in small groups and then sharing as a whole class...students will have the opportunity to create their own powerful messages for change through song lyrics. The final piece to this task is the "Scrammy" awards where students will be evaluated by you for their presentation of their final piece, but they will also be participating in the music awards with their peers.

What makes a hero a hero? How do we as individuals define heroism in others and in ourselves. How do the essential characteristics of a Hero lead to Heroic action? All critical questions that students will have the opportunity to explore in some way through this inquiry unit. Students will have the opportunity to create their own characters before analyzing and sharing their inferences about heroism that exists within their lived experience! This learning unit is comprised of 8 different lessons, along with graphic organizers, exit tickets, opportunities for technology integration and finally multiple opportunities for assessment in language.
