Listening or speaking starter / plenary for physical descriptions in Spanish

For a lesson on physical descriptions, either use for LISTENING: pupils have scrap paper and pen or a mini whiteboard. You give a short or long sentence in Spanish describing one of the people 1-6 on the images. You can therefore adapt the language to your group. Pupils then write down the number of the person it could be - you could even do a sentence that could describe 2 or 3 of the people to make it harder. To make this activity a bit easier, you could go through each photo from 1-6, and for each one give 2 short phrases, one that is true, one false, and pupils write the correct one. SPEAKING: assuming pupils have had plenty of practise with the vocab, get them to give a short or long sentence describing each person.

Worksheet to practise Spanish verbs in preterite and imperfect using the Toy Story song Cambios extraños ‘strange things’ - if pupils have already had plenty of receptive practice with these tenses, you could do this as a conjugation practice exercise - pupils complete the conjugations and then listen to the song and check their answers. Or, you could use this during the receptive processing stage of practice - by this point, they are familiar with the endings and this provides an opportunity to practise them through listening, they listen, and using their knowledge of endings and phonics, write what they hear. Intended for the study of films in Spanish, this handout provides introductory steps to analysing film, and a comprehensive glossary of vocabulary in English and Spanish with detailed explanations and examples. The examples relate to the Almodovar film, Volver, but the principles can be applied to any film. It is roughly aimed at students studying for A-Level, Pre-U or IB (aged 16+). Whilst this resource is designed to provide information, you can also create activities from it, for example, by mixing up the Spanish and English words to match up, or match words to definitions. Or, you could assign different students certain terms and ask them to produce a short analysis of these aspects in one key scene to present to the class.

After learning about el día de los muertos / day of the dead, beginners can learn how to describe someone in the past so they can write a simple ‘tribute’ to someone that has passed, this can be turned into a seasonal display and pupils can decorate their tribute with marigolds or other flowers, photos or drawings. Worksheets include: 2 sheets of vocab activities to do (after you’ve introduced pupils to some of the basic descriptions vocab) Sentence builder for writing a tribute - modelled answers in grid to help. This can be used to do dictations, aural translations etc. using mini-whiteboards and having pupils use the sentence builder. Blank writing sheet for once pupils have practised enough - can be used as assessment.

Listening gap-fill activity to practise vocab on describing people - read out the transcript included and pupils fill in gaps. Afterwards you can ask them true or false questions about each of the descriptions, or they can write their own true or false statements for each person. Following this, you could give them the same blank copy and repeat the activity but substitute the gaps for other vocab to practise!
