The timeline has been created from a set of first hand accounts taken from a variety of people in order to give a clear view of how 17,000 Guernsey children and adults experienced evacuation to the British mainland in June 1940. The story is told through the voice of an evacuated Guernsey mother. Because Guernsey was only 30 miles from occupied France, the fear of invasion was very real. The evacuees began to leave Guernsey on 20 June 1940 and the island was bombed by Germany on 28 June and occupied two days later. The evacuees remained in England, Scotland and Wales for five years. Guernsey was liberated on 9th May 1945, but due to the damage inflicted on the island by the German occupiers, the evacuees could not return home for months.
