This resource is ideal for Higher Modern Studies (SQA) or for those studying electoral systems for other Politics courses. This resource offers a model answer to the 20 mark question: “Some electoral systems are largely unrepresentative” Discuss this is relation to electoral systems that you have studied. The essay discusses First Past the Post, Additional Member System and Single Transferable Vote. The accompanying task requires that pupils deconstruct the task by identifying: the line of argument, the knowledge points, analysis and evaluation points. Pupils can firstly read through the essay and, using highlighters they can create a key for Line of argument, K, A, E points. This can then be transferred to the worksheet.

This table shows candidates how to divide up knowledge and analysis in answer to the question ‘Analyse the pressures faced by political representatives’ (12 marks) It is ideally suited to Higher Modern Studies but may also suit Government and Politics courses. The resource is available in both pdf and word format. Teachers may wish to remove the analysis points so that pupils can be challenged to think themselves about how to analyse the significance of each knowledge point. Alternatively all K and A points could be removed for pupils to complete independently. The teacher could use the completed grid a a teaching guide. To differentiate further, the K and A sentences could have words removed for pupils to complete.

A ready made and self-contained research activity for Higher Modern Studies Political Issues (Voting Behaviour) Students have to conduct their own research using three websites which are linked in the second document. The task instructs students to analyse statistical data from Ipsos MORI, YouGov and the Electoral Commission. They must then analyse each factor in terms of the relevance of age, media and class on voting behaviour. The task ends with a 20 mark essay from the 2018 Specimen Paper. Students are also required to evaluate the three website in terms of their reliability which also feeds into the source skill required for Paper 2. The pdf is a front cover in case you want to turn this into a booklet with a nice front cover.
