This resource allows students to learn more about the factors behind the accusations of witchcraft and to engage in different types of application activities that promote creativity and critical thinking. This resource includes 10 pages of content with: A video link (about 13 mins long) about what initiated the witchcraft hysteria in Salem, Massachusetts Colony, United States, and how things progressed, (Part 1) a fill-in activity based on the video, organized in an easy to fill in table format, answer key included, a map of colonial Salem and an informative caption, (Part 2) free response questions about the video in Part 1 to stimulate deeper thinking on the topic, answer key included, (Part 3a) a web quest activity that begins with a link to a web page. Students read the first page of the site’s content about the Salem Witch Trials and get a more in-depth look at different theories behind the accusations. They then answer 9 multiple choice questions about the reading, answer key included, (Part 3b) students pretend they are barristers (attorneys) in colonial Salem defending one of the accused. They write and present an argument to the Court for why their client is innocent. An evidence chart is provided to help students brainstorm and guide their argument(s), (Part 3c) students write and present an argument to modern descendants of the Salem Witch victims about how new scientific evidence may explain the witch hysteria from 1692-3. (Part 4) a more in depth look via a reading on the life and symptoms of Elizabeth Parris, the girl who began the Salem Witch craze. It includes a critical thinking question that can be answered orally or in written form, based on the desire of the teacher.
