Addition Number Games

Addition Number Games

hese game are covering the numeracy strands for the Ontario curriculum. The idea of these sheets is that students will work cooperatively with one another to achieve the highest levels. You want to encourage the math talk in your rooms and the best way to do this is to encourage cooperation and thinking. Students will move progressively through the pages with the highest level on each page being level 4. Although it may seem like the pages are repetitive in some places and random in others this isn’t the case. For example one page may focus on the numbers that can make 11. Another may work on doubling. The final level is designed to begin to get students to think of the number sentences more like an equation. This will help them in future grades. This level is worth more points of course. Some questions will repeat and this is designed not only to give success, but also to begin to solidify the facts in kids minds.. Alternately I’ve left another set of directions with this unit if you would prefer to differentiate learning and offer choice. The page will instruct students to pick 3 of the questions to complete (rather than working through each level). This offers the student to progress at their own pace. There are also included a set of each game in black and white so if you prefer you can use those as well. The questions are designed to begin to lead students toward equations in algebra and away from thinking in a linear way.
