A flexible Literacy lesson that uses the topic of fire to generate ideas of a poem. This is an excellent lesson for the end of a poetry topic. Children are encouraged to use their senses as well as simile and onomatopoeia to create a poem all about fire. this would fit in very well with Bonfire Night, the Stone Age, Fire of London or Halloween. Children can write their poetic phrases onto flames and build up their poem like a real bonfire. This makes for a wonderful class display. Alternatively, there is writing paper for the children to use instead.

Most people would have died but St Martin survived and continued to live with a hole in his stomach. Whole class checklists allow the teacher to have an overview of the whole class on one page and identify gaps to cover further. They include working at, working towards and greater depth checklist. Additionally, there is a spelling checklist of a shortened version of the common exception words, contractions and some suffix words. Individual checklists for pupil books allow children to identify how well they are doing and what they need to work on next. Checklists are available using the exact language of the interim framework and a ‘child speak’ version.
