Word Families - Blending Onsets and Rimes

Word Families - Blending Onsets and Rimes

This pack focuses on the phonological concepts of word families. 'Onset' and 'rime' are terms used to describe phonological units of a single-syllable word. The onset is the initial consonant or consonant blend / digraph. The rime is the vowel and any final consonants. Words that share the same rime are in the same word family. Teaching about onset and rime – word families – helps students recognise common chunks within words. This awareness is significant in learning to read and spell ... it will have a positive effect on the students’ literacy skills. Objective: Know and apply onset-rime phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words in word families - blending onsets and rimes. Knowledge Base - Phonics Concepts: short vowel sounds, long vowel sounds, consonant sounds, digraphs, blends, silent letters, syllables, onsets/rimes (word families), rhyming awareness The words in this pack have one-syllable construction ranging from these base forms – CVC (bag), CVCC (king), CVVC (seat), CVCe (nine), CVCCC (night) – to double and triple consonant onsets. The rimes used in this pack vary from basic, as in ‘at’, to more complex, as in ‘ight’. If students know these rimes, they will know hundreds of early reading words. Ensure the students know all the single letter sounds prior to introducing word families. This pack includes 140 pages of: Onset & Rime Cards (each card is just smaller than half A4 size) Word Family Sheets Word Families Bingo Cards Worksheets and 2 Board Games *The student worksheets are all teacher-friendly black & white.

Year 2 Phonics Pack – Long and Short Vowels

Year 2 Phonics Pack – Long and Short Vowels

This Year 2 phonics pack (50 pages) focuses on long and short vowel sounds and common vowel team conventions for representing long vowel sounds. Included in this pack: Spin and Write sheets, Interactive Notebook flap sheets, Short to Long Vowel Sound sheets (change a word by adding one letter), Roll, Read, Colour sheets (blackline and colour), Vowel Books and Sound Chart. The long vowel flip flap sheets can be used in a Reading/Language Arts Interactive Notebook, or glued onto an A4 backing sheet. The title rectangle can be cut out and glued to the top of the page. Cut out the whole outer flip flap rectangle; fold along the vertical line to the right of the word list; then cut along the horizontal lines between the flaps. Glue the word list rectangle onto the backing sheet. The student reads all the words in the word list, rolls a dice, chooses a word from the appropriate long vowel digraph group, and writes it under the matching flap. The race is to see which flap is the first to have the ten group words written underneath it. The options for each dice roll are displayed on the flaps. The racing process of the first two activities adds a fun component. The students are not racing against each other ~ they are racing to see which word group finishes first. Colouring the sheets also adds to the enjoyment. Other phonics concepts can be reinforced with these literacy activities – eg consonant blends and digraphs.

Literacy Games – Phonics Fun with Blends and Digraphs

Literacy Games – Phonics Fun with Blends and Digraphs

(Year 2, 3) Help your students build fluency with these literacy games that focus on phonological awareness. This literacy pack includes phonic work with initial consonant blends, consonant digraphs, vowel digraphs and r-controlled vowels. It comprises 11 literacy games. Each coloured game sheet – with 8 matching words for each spinner section – can be laminated or placed inside a plastic sleeve. There are instructions on each sheet; the game could be adapted to suit your students’ needs, e.g. ‘3 in a Line’ instead of 4. Other Game Variations: Bump – the objective is still to claim 4 words in a line (row, column or diagonal); instead of circling the word from their spin, the player can dot the top left corner of the word box with their coloured marker (each player has a different-coloured whiteboard marker); if a word has only one dot, that dot can be bumped off with another player’s dot if that word matches their spin; if a player has 2 dots in the word box, they win that word; the first to have 4 words in a line is the winner (1 or 2 dots in the word boxes). Race to the Finish – 2 or 4 players; each player can pick 2 columns or spinner sections (2 players) / 1 column or spinner section (4 players); if a player spins and has no words left beginning with that blend/digraph, no word is circled and it is the next person’s turn; the first player to circle all their words from their spinning is the winner. The games can support your guided reading lessons. Pairs/groups can play by themselves or with your instruction.
