The brief was "Teach 'Best Value for Money' at GCSE Foundation level to a Year 10 class of 25 students with 2 EAL students. The main part of the lesson is the students completing 14 questions on Best Value. The questions have been very carefully selected to increase in difficulty. Everything else works around that. Some of the questions came from the Web, some from examination practice paper software and some I made up. The Misleading Prices starter presents supermarket price labels with unusual offers on which prompts an interest at the start and provides some good starting discussion. The Baked Beans plenary was made more visual by me having the actual tins in those sizes for the student to look at and pass around. You need to read the lesson plan first and you'll see how it all fits together. It was used for a one hour lesson where I tried to exemplify everything I could about my style of teaching and my knowledge of how to show progress in a lesson. The lesson plan had been scrutinized by a Maths HOD, a SENCO and a Headteacher who had given input for me to improve it before hand. It was designed to have minimal teacher talk and lots of the students working. The lesson plan details all the prior knowledge needed and then everything I could think of to use in the next few lessons so it is a complete module of work for Best Value. In hindsight after the event: I should have had more picture questions prepared for the EAL students. There should had been more teaching of the different methods at the start This resource represents a huge investment of my time as I had a week to prepare and improve on it. You are getting an outstanding lesson resource which although you will need to adapt to your own lesson style I think you will have to do little to modify the resources as all the ideas are there. It is pretty comprehensive.

You are on a sinking ship and you have to choose three people from the list of 10 people to save. You initially are told their key descriptor e.g. "Ex Heroin Addict" so many students will choose not to take this person. Later you find out that he/she is a survival expert as well so choices will change. I've used this with several Y8 classes and several Y7 classes. You need to think carefully about the titles of the people to make them appropriate to your classes. You can easily change the resources. Get the students in small groups all huddled around one sheet of A3 which you've printed the table onto. After you give them another fact about a person get them to write down on the table sheet who they want to save. Last time I did this I kept a record myself on an Excel Spreadsheet which meant we could keep the class trends on the IWB. I've enjoyed using this so much as the classes really get into it - even last lesson on a Friday. I've been thinking that I could use it again (after ammending the roles) with a group (even if they've already had it) if Mr Ofsted arrived on a day when PHSE was timetabled! There's also a dilemmas Senteo SMART Response thrown in which is good for discussions.

My colleague and I came up with these targets to use for our Y5 to Y8 Maths end of year reports where we have to give each and every student one single Maths specific target to work on. We will probably add some more when we start the reports but for now we had to get a starting point. These may be a good starter for anyone else who is having to do this. There are only nine statements (there are eleven but two are gender specific) but we think they should pretty much cover everything. An example is "Recall knowledge and apply this to solve problems." Here is a fun differentiated engaging Bingo game where students are tested on whether they know their angle types such as no turn, acute angle, right angle, obtuse angle, straight angle, reflex angle and full turn. Students can choose their own nine numbers or the teacher can give out any of seventy-two randomised bingo cards. There are four sizes of bingo card depending on your preference and photocopy budget. Edit: After playing it in class it is better with 12 numbers per game if using the generated Bingo cards. They are now included as well - there’s 126 unique cards which make for a lot of games. These are laid out to print on to A4 sheets of 3x7=21 labels The slides provide six games of 24 angles (which is enough to provide a winner): The first three games support learners by specifically describing the angle type. The fourth game only provides the angle type and a generic description The fifth & sixth game (hardest) only provides the angle type.

C3B4Me Poster and Exercise Book Sticker Seen this idea which I've adapted for my learners. It relies on having your classroom wall displays up to date so that students can always see display related to the work they are doing. You have to work to get the balance right between not answering their hands up when they are stuck and helping them..The intention is that they should become resilient independent learners.

This was used for a Y7 interview lesson, but could easily be adapted for any age probably between Y5 to Y10 depending on ability. It is rich in discussion, engagement and activity so ticks a lot of boxes. The lesson plan includes a full commentary on what is going on so you will be able to show what you were trying to achieve. It also lists a number of ideas to use next lesson to show that you have thought about "where next". It is full of many activities - more than you could possibly achieve in a lesson - so it is pretty comprehensive. I last used it two years ago and have since learnt a lot more about Maths Mastery, lesson planning, engagement and challenge, etc and as yet haven't updated this resource to accommodate these improvements. So it is up to you to pick and choose the bits you want to use. However, the basic change I would make if I used this now would be to reduce it down to one starter, one main and one plenary and then focus more on achieving a more specific learning objective and then assessing progress on this. So I wouldn't actually change the bits I would use now - just cut out many of the other bits. In other words by buying this you are getting a superb bundle of resources. Use the lesson PowerPoint to prompt you for the order for the lesson. Most of the activities mentioned in the lesson plan and PowerPoint are included - (I couldn't locate them all). The runaround activity mentioned but not completely there is simply place the names of the 10 quadrilaterals around the room. The students are then given lots of property cards and have to go around the room putting the cards with the right quadrilaterals. This does work very well. All of this does represent a huge amount of work. Some of the resources ideas are adapted from the Web but all have been improved to make more effective in my style of lesson. There is also a link to a very good song on YouTube which the children love. This got me the job I went for two years ago. I'm sure it could do the same for you too! :)

Over a hundred ideas for lessons. Wrote this a couple of years ago and then updated this week after two years of working in a Requires Improvement school where I've had a lot of feedback and so had lots of improvements. Most of the ideas are innovations of other peoples ideas but I've always tried to put an element of fun into the lessons. I am sure that you will find at least ten of these which you will like which you haven't seen before or thought of before and you will want to try out. Not all ideas will work for you and either way they need to fit in with your school ethos and the current trends in your school. However there is loads in here to think about. Worksheet with about 40 questions on whether numbers are divisible by three or not Answer sheet included Instead of them writign on the worksheet you could get them to write questions in their books. I've included a copy of the top of the WS on a template for 2 x 4 labels - Pupils stick one of these in instead of copying out the top of the workheet. They then attempt as many questions as they can from the worksheet in the time you give them. Advantage of this is that you don't end up with half finshed exercise sheets glued in their books.

The PowerPoint has 35 slides with each detailing a children's party game. You'll need to prepare the resources for each one (some don't need any). What it gives you is 35 great tried and tested ideas of what has worked for me so you won't have to do the thinking. I'd like to think the games are obvious but ....Message me if you can't work out what the game is (but only after you've asked a few of your colleagues or looked it up on the Web!) I've found that if you choose a few games to get warmed up. then you can flick through the PPT and see what the children want to do next. Do the opposite and Kims Game are included as they needed a PowerPoint too. Have fun :)!

Here are two sets of domino loop cards. You can use them for starters and then back them up with the matching worksheet or use as a plenary and then use the matching worksheet as the next days starter. You print them onto A4 card and cut them out. Then shuffle and give a set to your students. They have to rearrange the cards into a line order by matching the question to the answer. They are all questions like "The probability of getting a six on a fair die is..." The first set has 22 cards and the second (which is longer to complete and the questions are harder as well) has 34 questions. Afterwards (I like to get something into the student exercise books) there are matching worksheets where some of the questions have to be reworked out and written onto the sheets before the sheet is stuck in. There are two versions of each worksheet (One has more answers to put in so you can give to your quicker students). All in you are getting two sets of domino cards, each with two matching worksheets. Solutions to the domino cards and the worksheets are included! You could easily modify each of these card sets and WS to reduce the questions down to less for your lower/slower students.
