Post Covid KS3 Rhythm Workshops

Covid 19 has obviously changed the way we live, work and indeed teach. These rhythm workshops were designed during lockdown as a way to get children back in the music classroom playing, performing and creating music in a safe and covid secure way. Objectives To create rhythmic workshops for UK school years 7-9 (ages 11-14) for when schools re-open. To re-build confidence To develop coordination To introduce key areas to new year 7s as well as build on and development ideas studied by years 8 and 9 pre-lockdown. Challenges Students only allowed to face front in their designated seating plan. No percussive instruments to be shared or given out. No group work. Material / What you Will Need Drum Sticks Mouse mats / foam pads Drum sticks A bucket of disinfectant (to sanitise sticks at the end of lesson) Audio tracks (see list below) Lesson Format Lessons are designed to run for 90 -120 minutes but can be scaled down to two 60 minute lessons if required. Lessons are presented on a keynote / powerpoint presentation. Please note you will need to install the font ‘music sync’ (included in the zip file) BEFORE using the keynotes / powerpoints. I have done my best to correct the formatting errors caused when exporting from keynote to powerpoint but feel free to make any further adjustments as needed.

Creepy Crawly Warmups

Engage your students with this fun warm up. These warmups are designed for snare drum but would work just as well on any other percussion instrument or a clapping exercise. Colour and black and white worksheets are included as well as a ‘draw your own’ version. Teacher’s notes are also included. The warmups can also be printed to hand out to students / other staff members. This course is perfect as a stand alone ‘one off’ game / exercise as well as a great addition to your existing music syllabus. The game does not have to be taught in it’s entirety, you could choose to play one level per class / week. Each level can be used as a stand alone lesson; perfect for looking at rhythm with a variety of age groups. Do please feel free to get in touch for more information and advice on how to use this course. This resource is a great addition to the Rhythm Master, Cue Card and creepy crawly colouring in worksheets. Please feel free to ask any questions. **Please note that this game was created on apple’s keynote. I have included a powerpoint version although the animations / transitions will not be the same. **

Creepy Crawly Cards

Engage your students with this fun card game. There are a number of ways to use these cards. I personally laminate the cards with letters on the back (6 sets of 6). I then get students to select a letter until we have 4 cards and then play the rhythm either on a drum or by clapping. This is perfect as a stand alone ‘one off’ game / activity as well as a great addition to your existing music syllabus. It is great for looking at rhythm with a variety of age groups. Do please feel free to get in touch for more information and advice on how to use this course. This resource is a great addition to the Creepy Crawly Rhythm Master, Warm Ups, Dominos and colouring in worksheets. Please feel free to ask any questions.

Creepy Crawly Dominos

Engage your students and help them to learn note and rest names as well as their corresponding values in a game of dominos. This resource provides 2 sets of dominos which are designed to be cut out. PDFs of both text and music symbols are provided. There are several ways to incorporate this into your lesson (please feel free to share what you come up with)! I personally would go with getting students to match the musical symbols with the different creepy crawly pictures then mix them up and see if you can’t have a good game of dominos! This resource is a great addition to the Rhythm Master, Cue Card and creepy crawly colouring in worksheets. A few blank dominos are provided at the foot of each page. Please feel free to ask any questions.

T Rex Mouse Music Game

In this fun class or individual lesson, students learn about dynamics. The Trex is a loud note and the mice are soft notes. This game was originally created for drum students both in group and one-to-one settings. However this can easily be adapted to suit other instruments and / voice. This resource can be used as a warm up or an end of lesson activity or even used for an entire lesson. This is a resource designed for drummers who are just starting out but can easily be developed to suit more advanced players. This product contains an interactive keynote and powerpoint presentation. When used on a tablet students can select the cards they want by tapping on the screen. When used on a computer a simple mouse click will suffice. A PDF of the presentation is also included should handouts be needed for students.
