I have been teaching for 6 years, originally training in Science and covering a wide range of subjects since. I have tried to provide schemes of work for each area - I know as an NQT and when a subject was new to me, this is what was missing on TES! I hope that these resources will help to kick-start your planning and make life that little bit easier.

SEN Photosynthesis resource pack

A selection of resources suitable for lower ability / SEN teaching of Photosynthesis. The photosynthesis equation card sort is very simple, and I used this as a starter which could be left out on tables as a visual reminder when needed. The Photosynthesis cards can be used in a couple of ways - I started by using the keyword and picture sections to build literacy, and then added in the definitions. Definitions have word blanks to get students thinking. Spell check - 3 versions of each word, only one is correct, circle the correct one. Greenhouse worksheet - used to aid discussion on how greenhouse features can aid photosynthesis.

Comfort Challenge Panic worksheet

Simple activity to get students talking, and understand a little more about what challenges individuals. Teacher reads a list of statements, and students decide how the statement would make them feel: Comfort - safe and comfortable, easy. Challenge - uncomfortable, uneasy, nervous. Panic - too scary, shut down, run away. Adaptations: Students could be encouraged to draw an object relating to the statement rather than writing complex statements. More able students could also add their own examples.

Health and Social Care BTEC Level 3 Grade Calculator

A detailed excel spreadsheet to calculate the current points scores, and therefore grades, for your students studying BTEC Level 3 Health and Social Care. Can easily be adapted for other Level 3 BTEC subjects, you would just need to update the points values if they differ from the Health and Social care course.

KS3 Biology - This is usually the first lesson I teach Year 7 for our Cells topic to get them hooked. The video referred to is the David Attenborough - Tree of Life clip which is readily available on Youtube.com. Differentiated worksheets for the whole lesson.

Why exercise?

PPT to discuss Metabolic rate and exercise. Begins with looking at types of exercise and how to measure fitness, BMI and the problems with relying on BMI as a measure of health, then there is a section for more able students to look at health food claims. This was a really useful section to help students see that they need to question what they read and make informed decisions about what is healthy. BMI calculations included.

Lesson plans and accompanying resources to aid in the teaching of 7A Cells topic. Starter/Plenary activities - newspaper starter, cell bingo, cell sequencing Main activities - Model cells, cell circus laminates (can be used as a market place, or stuck up around the room so students can collect relevant information during the lesson. I usually leave these up then for the remainder of the topic as a reference material.)

Poor Health Market Place

Resources to run a Market Place activity on Poor Health. Instructions for the market place activity are outlined in the PPT - activity structure taken from The Teachers Toolkit. Essentially, you take large amounts of information and condense them into pictorial form, then the group have to either teach their topic to others, or go around being taught and then share all the information with the rest of their group. It is a great way to get students thinking, and is easy to differentiate by altering the amount of words they are allowed to use on their posters. This activity is always a favourite of my students.

Scheme of work and accompanying resources for 7C Environment and Feeding Relationships. Includes Food chain sentence maker - developed to encourage literacy through science. This was used regularly during the topic, with focuses on different words. Gruffalo activity - can be drawn over one or two lessons depending on the ability of the group. Originally developed for a low literacy nurture group, there is scope to develop further with complex webs and ID key activities.

This is an independent learning activity for teaching energy resources. It was taken from the Practical Action website, but I have included my own PPT which is an adapted version of the activity. Students have to research different energy resources and decide which would be appropriate for the different island communities. It encourages teamwork, independent learning and problem solving.

These resources are taken directly from practialaction.org. A very simple, independent learning activity. An interesting way to get some competition into the classroom.
