Autumn is a wonderful time of year where there are a lot of changes happening. This can be a fantastic opportunity to look at poetry and description. These lessons will get your students looking descriptive language and adjectives to describe the world around them through an acrostic poem. They will look at adjectives and other descriptive techniques to describe autumn before writing their own acrostic poems. Part 1: Get the students to go outside to find the most interesting leaf they can. They will then stick the leaf in the middle of the worksheet and write adjectives / descriptive phrases around the outside to describe the leaf. Part 2: This lesson is all about thinking of adjectives and descriptive phrases to describe Autumn. They must find somewhere outside (ideally around trees) and use their descriptive language techniques to describe the changes happening in autumn. Part 3: It’s now time for the students to write their acrostic poems using the descriptive language they’ve been looking at. This pack contains a few different poem templates for them to use. Shape builder is a great activity for shape recognition as well as looking at the properties of shapes. The students will head outside and create the shapes on the card using sticks before completing the shape ID card with its properties. This resource contains differentiated shape ID cards. Diff. 1 – Students are required to fill out the number of edges and corners. Diff. 2 – Students are required to fill out the number of edges, right angles and parallel lines. These outdoor division task cards are a great way to give your class lots of practice at division using their chosen method. Each card contains a division problem that they will need to solve in your outdoor space. In order to solve these problems, measure the given length stated on the task card using an appropriate method (string, ruler, etc.) and then divide the length by the length of the specified object (leaf, stick, or stone). For example, if the length of the playground was 25 meters and the length of a stick was 50cm, the division would be 25,000 / 50. This resource can be differentiated by getting the students to use the method of division best suited to their ability. Become a police officer for a day while students use their measuring, division, and number skills to work out how fast cars are going in a chosen area using formulas and conversions. For this activity your class will measure out a stretch of road before timing cars and using formulas to figure out the speed that the car is moving. They will collect a set of results in a table before creating a bar graph to clearly represent their data. After the investigation they will be given some evaluation questions to answer about what they’ve found out. This is a fantastic real-world math investigation for those aspiring police officers! This is a great outdoor experiment that demonstrates how the earth is kept warm enough for life (as well as global warming) through the greenhouse effect. They will carry out an experiment comparing the difference in temperature between the air in a glass jar compared to the air outside of the jar. This demonstrates the effect the greenhouse gases have on the Earth. They will go onto think about what happens when we add to the greenhouse gases and the effect this has on the Earth’s temperature. **Equipment needed: **tall jar, 2 x thermometers, 2 x pieces of white card, timer, sunshine & an activity pack. Teaching Structure: Ask the students how they think the Earth is kept warm. Explain that there are gases in the atmosphere that trap the warming radiation in and keep the Earth warm. Explain that they are going to demonstrate this process by looking how the air warms up in a glass compared to the air outside of the glass. Get the students to complete the method sheet. Place 2 pieces of white card on the floor in a sunny spot (to keep the floor variable the same). Put the jar with a thermometer in on one piece of card and put the lid on (if the lid is opaque put the jar upside down). Place the other thermometer on the other bit of card. Record the temperature of both thermometers at the decided intervals and record the results in the table. Complete the discussion questions and evaluation sheet. This is a great outdoor activity to get students practicing column addition both with and without decimals as well as practicing their measurement skills. They will measure two items that they find outside before adding the lengths together using column addition in the space provided on the activity sheets. This resource has three levels of challenge. Measure to the nearest whole number Measure to the nearest mm (tenth) Measure three items to the nearest mm. For this activity provide each child with a tape measure or ruler and our activity sheet. For this activity students will use chalk to draw Halloween themed pictures on your playground using a specified measurement or scale to work to. This is a great resource to introduce or recap rhyming that can be used in a variety of ways. This pack contains 32 rhyming pairs with visual prompts on each card. **Outdoor Activity – **Rhyming pairs hunt (whole class or small groups). Cut out and laminate the cards. Hide them around your outdoor space. Get the students to go find as many rhyming pairs as they can. To extend this activity you could get them to write a short poem or sentence using the rhyming pairs that they’ve found. **Memory Pairs **(in pairs or small groups). Put the cards face down spread out on the table or floor. Taking it in turns, the students will flip over two cards. If they find a rhyming pair they take the cards and have another go, if not then the cards get turned facedown and the next player tries to find a pair. **Match The Pairs **(individual or pairs). This is a very simple but effective activity where students will simply match the cards with their correct rhyming pair.
