The Mysteries Of Harris Burdick

The Mysteries Of Harris Burdick

Creative writing unit of work based on the book The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg. The book consists of different images with interesting captions that are supposed to be used as a visual stimulus for children's writing. For copyright reasons, I have not included the image that the writing unit is based around (the house taking off like it is a rocket). However, a quick google search of 'The Mysteries of Harris Burdick the house' will soon bring it up in no time at all. On the presentation and resources, where this image should be used, I have left a gap saying 'insert image here' which you can very easily do. The unit of work is designed for Year 4. The learning objectives covered on the presentation are: To plan a descriptive piece of writing; to use a dictionary and thesaurus to find alternative vocabulary; to use a simile in your writing; to use brackets to add extra, non-essentail information; and to use an adjective opener. Included is also a model text for you to read to the children so that they can get an idea of what you expect of them, and you could also magpie from it too. Also, included is a pupil planning sheet. Tried and tested resource that worked really well.
