As a" jobbing" teacher of English I KNOW what my students need to improve their literacy skills, comprehend what is required of them as regards reading criteria and what will inspire them to write to describe, argue or to help forge a narrative...and this knowledge is distilled into my resources! The photo-slides, model paragraphs, sentence stems, along with planning ideas, all compliment each other and as a jobbing teacher of English I can return to the resources time and time again...

Descriptive writing : bring match day alive!

(1)
A photo-story capturing a day at a premiership match..."from the home of Manchester United!" Encourage your students to experiment with descriptive writing: with photos of football fans, hot dog sellers, "Fred the Red", the thin blue line, terraces (both full and empty to contrast) players, stadium and images from match day you perhaps wouldn't expect - to galvanise and inspire their creativity. To include sentence starters, discussion points, word banks, model paragraphs and criteria crib sheet. Why not download a soundtrack from an actual football match and play in the background at the start of your lesson? Useful for ks3 or weaker ks4 perhaps? All images are the author's own!

Power point to help you on the first day back. A number of quizzes, real life literacy mistakes, competitions, tasks and a few ground rules to establish you new classes. A main writing to describe task, including examples, model responses, criteria, sentence starters and stem sentences. Several tasks help to inform your planning...don't know what a topic sentence is? Then back to the drawing board! Don't know how to use the semi-colon correctly? Then you had better explain. Get to know your class better...suitable for 7s, 8s and perhaps weaker 9s and 10s. Of course, certain elements could be used as starters or one-off tasks, to help with other classes and lessons. I've even been more than a little inspirational! All photos are author's own.

Please feel free to download my sampler - I believe that the few slides offered up by TES as a taster, do not at times, do justice to my resources - hence, free access to more slides from three of my resources. All of the ppts offered have been employed in the classroom and tweaked accordingly if necessary. The writing "springboards" include marking criteria, photo-stories, examples, ideas, techniques, structural devices and planning materials. Ideal for both GCSE and KS3. ALL of the photographs are the author's own.

Why not get them to write a 100 word version as extension work. Set the task up as homework. ( Let's be honest - marking 50 words -makes life easier for all world weary teachers of English.) Other versions available. Author owns copyright on all images.
