This lesson explores the reasons why Thatcher won the elections of 1983 and 1987. It looks at the reasons why the Conservatives were popular but also other factors which contributed to their success such as the ‘Falklands factor’ and the unpopularity of Labour. There is a worksheet included and two hyperlinked clips, one from 1983 and one from 1987.

This is the first three lessons which cover the AQA Modern Britain syllbabus, the impact of Thatcherism. There is an introduction to Thatcher as a leader which deals with ideology and the second lesson explores why Thatcher was victorious in the 1983 and 1987 elections. The third lesson examines why Thatcher was successful by analyising the divided opposition. There are printed notes with each lesson and hyperlinked clips throughout.

This is a complete lesson on the background to the tensions in Vietnam from 1945 to 1954. It includes a powerpoint with a short video clip which looks at the reasons for tension leading to the involvement of the USA. The lesson ends with the Battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954. Two worksheets are included together with a series of class notes for the students and also a set of notes on the Geneva Agreement A ‘write an account’ 8 mark question is also included based on how tensions grew in Vietnam.

This is a complete lesson for AQA Modern Britain, 1951-2007, which covers the liberal reforms of the 1960s. A powerpoint is included which includes a starter of Roy Jenkins’ speech from 1959. There is a handout to introduce students to the reforms together with an A3 sheet for students to complete. Students will need the AQA Sally Waller textbook to complete this or any other A level textbook of the period. Four short clips connected to the four areas of reform are also included to assist students with the completion of the table. Students are then asked to make a judgement on who was responsible for the introduction of the reforms.

The lesson begins when Labour won the 1966 election and why there were divisions in the party at this point. The lesson looks at the Labour defeat in the 1970 election and how/why the divisions contributed to this. The lesson concludes with the planning of an essay based on the reasons why Labour lost the 1970 election.
