Cat Maths

I like Maths and Cats. However since not everyone does, I have only put photos of cats on the thumbnails. My resources are all for high school mathematics.

Algebra Crossword 3 levels Substitution

Three levels: Easy (all positive variables) Medium (one negative variable, mostly 1-2 step operations including squared) Hard (one negative variable, multi step operations) Some ideas for this resource: - An easy to mark homework sheet, students can also notice when they have an incorrect answer as it doesn't fit into the crossword - An activity to make classroom a bit more fun than textbook questions - An extension worksheet for early finishers. Thanks for looking! PDF files.

Algebra Substitution Game

Algebra Race – In partners or threes, every student needs 2 dice each, which match their cards. For example if their cards have b’s and r’s they should choose a black (or blue) and red die. If you run out of the correct colours, just have them write down white = b etc. Set a time limit such as 15 minutes. Have the cards in a pile upside down. Students each roll their dice and then pick a card each. They then substitute in their dice numbers and solve for the answer without a calculator and write this down. All students in the group have done this at the same time. They then have an opportunity to check each other’s and gain a bonus 5 points if they find an error in their partner’s work. They then move on to their second turn and add their answer to their previous. At the end of the timer, the highest score wins. They must ensure they have the same amount of turns each, eg it is not a race of who is the fastest. Lots of alternative game options included in the file!

Index Laws Investigation Bundle

This resource contains 4 investigations of the Index Laws: - Multiplying - Dividing - Brackets (raising a power to a power) - Power of 0 This is a great resources for students to understand indices and the laws rather than just memorise them. I use it with my year 8s but it could be used in Years 7-9. I get students to complete investigation 1, then do practice questions, then investigation 2, etc. Included in the file is TYPED ANSWERS to have printed in a folder for students to check their own or to put on the screen and go through as a class. In future I hope to add: Negative powers and fractional indices.
