Features of my lesson plans for KS3 and KS4 maths include sub-dividing topics into steps so that students develop one skill at a time, colour coded diagrams and explanations, worked solutions and putting the maths into real-life contexts. I am also focusing on different types of problem-solving questions and on questions where different topics are combined, say shape and algebra, probability and algebra, proportion and area. I welcome feedback and am open to suggestions for new lesson topics.

KS3 Algebraic Proof

KS3 Algebraic Proof

These two lessons are for capable KS3 students. Start with '1. Algebraic Proof Introduction' and the accompanying handouts and then continue with '2. Algebraic Proof Multiples' and its worksheet.

Plotting Linear Graphs

Plotting Linear Graphs

The lesson is aimed at KS3 and weak KS4 students. Students are led through the process of substituting into an algebraic expression, compiling a table and then taking the coordinates from the table to plot the linear graph. This lesson helps students understand that the (x, y) coordinates of a point are written horizontally but are typically compiled vertically in a table.

Rate of Flow

Rate of Flow

This lesson is for KS4 students and teaches them to tackle problems involving rate of flow of a liquid, the volume of a liquid and time. The topic follows the model used to teach density and speed.

Mutually exclusive events

Mutually exclusive events

This lesson is for KS4 students. It introduces the concept of mutually exclusive events. Worked solutions to the worksheet are included.

Probability Problems involving Algebra

Probability Problems involving Algebra

This lesson is for middle to high ability KS4 students. It teaches them how to use algebra to solve probability problems where there is an unknown. There are worked solutions tot he questions on the worksheet.

Degree of Accuracy

Degree of Accuracy

This lesson is the fourth and final in the series on Upper and Lower Bounds. In this lesson, students learn how to find the degree of accuracy to which a measurement can be given. Again the concept is explained through real-life contexts.

Functional Problems involving Volume

Functional Problems involving Volume

The lesson is for KS4 students. Functional problems involving volume are considered, including stacking smaller boxes in a larger box and finding into which category packages fall. Worked solutions to the worksheet are included.

Surface Area of Cuboids (Foundation version)

Surface Area of Cuboids (Foundation version)

THIS LESSON REQUIRES 1 SMALL CEREAL PACKET PER PAIR OF PUPILS COSTING AROUND £3 FOR 8 PACKETS. This lesson is for KS3 students and for KS4 students planning to take the Foundation paper. The lesson starts with students measuring the dimensions of the small cereal packet. They then cut open the packets and measure the dimensions of the resulting net and its six faces. Students move on to finding the surface area of a cuboid from a drawing and finally from the dimensions alone. Included are solutions to all questions asked of students.

Missing Probabilities and Exhaustive Events

Missing Probabilities and Exhaustive Events

This lesson is for KS4 students. The lesson revises finding missing probabilities and takes students into the concept of exhaustive and non-exhaustive events. Worked solutions to the worksheet are included.

Iteration

Iteration

This lesson is for high ability KS4 students. It explain show iteration works to find a solution to an equation. Worked solutions to the questions on the worksheet are given.

KS4 Geometric Proof

KS4 Geometric Proof

This lesson looks at geometric proof for KS4 students. Worked solutions to the questions on the differentiated worksheet are included. Questions include proving that triangles within larger shapes are congruent.

Identifying Parts of Circles

Identifying Parts of Circles

This lesson is for KS4 students. I teach this lesson before teaching circle theorems. It teaches students to look at the diagrams more closely and identify particular arcs, radii, sectors, segments, reflex and non-reflex angles. Worked solutions to the worksheet are included.

Utility Bills

Utility Bills

This lesson is for KS4 students. The lesson is differentiated. It starts with using meter readings to find the amount of energy used and the cost of that energy. It then includes a standing charge and finally VAT on the total bill. Worked solutions to the worksheet are included.

Comparing Measurements

Comparing Measurements

This lesson is for KS4 students looking to do the Higher paper. Students learn how to convert between different units including for compound quantities such as density and speed. Worked solutions to the worksheet are included.
