Irish History, War of Independence: a Process Drama

This Irish history product enables the students to learn about the Irish War of Independence experientially. It is process drama, not role play. It focuses on the effects of the war, from 1919 to 1922, on ordinary people. Additional information is supplied in powerpoint form to give background to the period. This research lists sources at the end. Information is included on people’s clothing, way of life, travel, etc. This is information which is not readily available, especially in a format for children. There are 5 lessons in the unit. It uses a variety of drama strategies including Hot seating, Carousel, Group Work. As process drama requires a lot of group work, it automatically gives the opportunity to enhance communication skills, including engagement, listening and turn-taking.

Creative Writing: Make up your own Fairy Tale!

This creative writing task to plan and write your own fairy tale is one that has been used many times before, and each time it has been unfailing success. You will be bowled over by the level of imagination displayed by the children. The product contains a Powerpoint outlining common tropes found in fairytales, and provides impetus for brainstorming session relating to the hero’s name, their tasks and their reward. The one caveat can be that the students are taking so long that they require several sessions to complete. The end result is always worth it.

This figure, featuring in Irish history and women’s history, was prominent in this decade of commemoration. It includes comprehension activities based on the recount and biography. No one participated in more events than Kathleen Lynn: the Great Lockout, the Easter Rising, the suffragettes, the Spanish flu. And she founded Ireland’s first children’s hospital. Yet she is largely forgotten about. This digital product - in Seesaw™ and Google™ - consists of an A4 information page followed by comprehension activities addressing most of the main comprehension strategies.

This product is an activity for children who are beginning to learn how to match digital and analogue time - something which can be quite useful for some. It consists of cards with times written on them and the child has to match them appropriately. A stopwatch can be used to add to the fun. The activity is probably best done in pairs, and is particularly helpful for children with special educational needs.

This creative writing lesson is well designed to elicit quality creative writing from your pupils. It consists of a stimulus - in this case, a poster saying Wanted Dead or Alive". The PowerPoint slides contain prompts for class or pair discussion, such as the cause and the character of the Wanted person. Particular emphasis placed on the point of view of the writer: will the pupil write from the point of view of the hunter or the hunted?
