Dumond Education

I am a primary teacher and have taught at every age and stage in various locations (Ireland, UK, Caribbean, and I am now in Asia). As well as working as a classroom teacher, I have worked as a specialist tutor, SENCo, and have run a PRU. I am particularly interested in evidence-informed practice and supporting pupils with SEN. Having worked in several locations with few resources, I designed CardEd as a multi-purpose tool suitable for a range of ages and to support several curricular areas.

Sample discussion topics (use the questions on the card as a basis for further examination of the theme/topic) include: science (food and nutrition/animal classifications), history (Titanic/explorers), geography (identifying hot and cold regions/what is happening to the polar ice-caps?), and social & personal educations (feelings/identifying unbecoming behaviours). A series of 10 frames to support the development of early number sense and the composing and decomposing of numbers. The sample frames use 2 colours to support pupils with the development of number bonds to 10. Tip: To begin with, cut these frames in half for work on bonds to 5. Thereafter, use the 10 frames for some of the activities below. Discuss: How many counters are needed to fill a row? (What number fills a row?) Which numbers do not fill a row? Which numbers fill more than the row? How many boxes are filled? How many are empty? Explore: Can the child demonstrate some different ways of showing various numbers on the 10 frame? Check recall (Subitising): Child A makes a pattern and flashes it to Child B for 3 seconds. Cover and check if Child B can arrange their counters in the same way. Compare: Which is the bigger number? How do you know? Can you show this on your 10 frames? Number Bonds: Using counters of 2 different colours, encourage children to explore different number bonds to 10.

The Leitner System 28/64 Day Tracking Documents

(0)
The Leitner System is a retrieval practice study tool involving the use of flashcards. Having created flashcards for the information they wish to retain, students review known cards at increasingly growing intervals. The most effective flashcards have one piece of information per card, e.g., A word on the front and the definition on the back; A question on the front and the answer on the back. Unknown cards are reviewed daily; the review period for known cards varies according to the review schedule being implemented. The linked videos show how to implement a modified version of the system across a 5-day week for young learners and demonstrate how the cards are moved through the boxes if the information on the card is known. The attached resource is aimed at older, independent learners implementing their own revision timetable. These tracking documents are suitable for implementing a 28-day or 64-day Leitner System. Students should be creating and adding new flashcards each day. Use of these tracking tools is explained more fully here: [https://www.dumondeducation.com/2019/05/07/taking-the-leitner-system-to-the-next-level-a-strategy-for-independent-learners-includes-free-download/]
