Pressure in Liquids

(0)
This resources provides a clear and easy-to-follow introduction to pressure in liquids. The resource is well supported by a simple demonstration of water coming out of three holes in a container, where the holes are spaced out evenly along a vertical line. By the end of the lesson, students should be secure in their understanding that liquid pressure increases as depth increases and the science behind why some objects float whilst others sink.
Pressure in Solids

Magnets and Magnetic Field

(0)
This resource provides a really clear introduction to magnets and magnetic fields. I like to begin with a short demonstration of magnetic field lines using iron filings, before providing my students with a bar magnet and a mini compass to carry out a few investigations of their own. The lesson includes interesting links to how snow foxes using magnetic field lines and the earth’s magnetic field, and finishes with a short true-false quiz.
Factors that effect the rate of an enzyme-catalysed reaction
harriet_newhouseharriet_newhouse

Factors that effect the rate of an enzyme-catalysed reaction

(0)
This resource considers four factors that effect the rate of an enzyme-catalysed reaction: temperature, pH, concentration of enzyme, and concentration of substrate. This resource includes enough information and visual aids to fill 2 or 3 lessons. When I teach this topic, my students carry out a simple experiment, looking at the rate of hydrogen peroxide decomposition, to provide experimental evidence for the effect of pH and temperature on enzyme (catalase) activity.
Factors effecting the rate of diffusion
harriet_newhouseharriet_newhouse

Factors effecting the rate of diffusion

(0)
This resource introduces diffusion and the factors that effect the rate of diffusion, in a fun and interactive way. The lesson includes a simple experiment to test how temperature effects the rate of diffusion.
Photosynthesis experiments
harriet_newhouseharriet_newhouse

Photosynthesis experiments

(0)
This resource introduces a series of experiments relating to the reactants and products of photosynthesis. The experiments provide evidence that carbon dioxide, chlorophyll and sunlight are required for photosynthesis to occur, and that oxygen and glucose are produced.
Homeostasis: Thermoregulation
harriet_newhouseharriet_newhouse

Homeostasis: Thermoregulation

(0)
This resource introduces thermoregulation and the actions or behaviours that increase or decrease heat loss. The resource includes a quick quiz and activity intstructing students to produce an A4 summary diagram explaining thermoregulation in humans.
Standard Form
harriet_newhouseharriet_newhouse

Standard Form

(0)
This resource introduces standard form, what it is and why it is useful. It includes a useful link to an animation on the topic, and questions with answers to give students practice on writing numbers in standard form.
DNA Structure
harriet_newhouseharriet_newhouse

DNA Structure

(0)
This PowerPoint resource provides a useful visual aid for a lesson on the discovery and structure of DNA. It includes activities, questions and video links. I usually begin the lesson by inviting students to write down everything they already know about DNA in a black pen. I then introduce Watson and Crick, and the structure of DNA, using all the key terms on the slide. I then give my students minutes to answer the 6 mark question on the structure of DNA. Students then self-mark their answer using the mark scheme included in the PowerPoint, and show me on their fingers how many marks out of 6 they achieved for the question. If students have access to their own laptops I then invite students to watch a few of the video links that go into slightly greater detail about the structure of DNA. At the end of the lesson I ask the students to return to the list they made at the beginning of the lesson about everything they already knew about DNA. I invite the students to spend a couple of minutes adding to their list in a green pen with everything they now know about DNA.
Transcription and Translation Step-by-Step
harriet_newhouseharriet_newhouse

Transcription and Translation Step-by-Step

(0)
This provides a useful visual resource, with written summaries, of the main stages in transcription and translation. I use it with my lower ability students who benefit from visual stimuli, as it goes through the processes step by step.
Mutations
harriet_newhouseharriet_newhouse

Mutations

(0)
This resource begins with a useful visual to introduce the topic of mutations and initiate discussion on point mutations. Students are then invited to watch two videos (links provided) before researching and answering a series of questions about mutations. I usually allow 20 minutes for the students to answer the questions on the worksheet, before going through the answers as a class (using the PowerPoint slides). If there is time, I then explain how mutations in bacteria enable them to become resistant to antibiotics.
Forces
harriet_newhouseharriet_newhouse

Forces

(0)
This PowerPoint provides a fun and easy-to-use introduction to forces, interactional pairs, contact and non-contact forces, and how forces are measured and represented.
Energy, Food and Fuels
harriet_newhouseharriet_newhouse

Energy, Food and Fuels

(0)
This resource provides a useful visual aid set of activities for the ‘energy in food’ or ‘fuel is fuel’ topic. It initiates important discussions about healthy diets, challenges students to use their mathematical skills and enables students to make links between their learning in maths, biology and physics. Students carry out a series of caluclations, including a calculation to see how much of different food types they need to consume to gain their daily recommended amounts of energy.
Energy Efficiency
harriet_newhouseharriet_newhouse

Energy Efficiency

(0)
This resource provides a visual stimulus to initiate discussions on energy efficiency and how to reduce our heating bills. Students are invited to produce a leaflet for house-holders who want to know what they can do to reduce their heating bills, and to design a house that has minimum energy standards. The resources also includes a few big questions relating to the topic.
Experiment Write Up Scaffold
harriet_newhouseharriet_newhouse

Experiment Write Up Scaffold

(0)
The following resource provides a helpful scaffold for students when designing, completing, recording, analysing and evaluating science experiments. I change the image and question on the first slide, depending on the experiment I plan on carrying out with my class. The second and third slides remain the same every time. This resource is adaptable, easy to use, and appropriate for KS3 and KS4 students.
Carbon Footprint

Heart Structure and Heart Dissection
harriet_newhouseharriet_newhouse

Heart Structure and Heart Dissection

(0)
This resource introduces the structure of the heart and double circulatory system. The second slide can be used both to introduce the different parts of the heart or as an assessment-for-learning activity at the end of the lesson. The third slide includes a worksheet that can be printed off and handed out to the students, for them to complete before the heart dissection. I usually project the fourth slide during the heart dissection to help students identify the different parts of the heart as they carry out their dissections. If there is time at the end of the lesson, I introduce the double circulatory system via an active learning activity, where students circulate around the classroom, holding either blue or red counters to represent deoxygenated and oxygenated red blood cells.
