Multiple Meaning Words~Homonyms, with Worksheets to Illustrate

Multiple Meaning Words~Homonyms, with Worksheets to Illustrate

Help your students learn about multiple meaning words that have the same spellings. Some people call them homonyms, but there is some controversy about what they are really called!.I wanted to make an activity to help my 2nd graders learn about multiple meaning words. I wanted them to get practical experience actually using the words in sentences. I used cards with pictures on them to help the students visualize the different meanings of the words in a concrete way. The words included in this pack with pictures on the words are: bowl, bat, check, cold, cook, crane, cut, fall, fish, fly, foot, kid, leaves, mouse, note, palm, play, ring, tie, watch, box, saw, bank, duck There are also worksheet pages that you can use to assess or reinforce learning. Each page has a word with a multiple meaning. The children draw a picture of two of the meanings and write a sentence to describe the word. Have fun! Thanks! Hilary Lewis

Genre Posters

Genre Posters

These colorful posters will help your students readily identify various genres in literature in a fun way. Use them to sort your classroom library books into different areas, or just use them as a reference in your library. Genres included are: Informational & Expository Text Fantasy Mystery Poetry Biography Realistic Fiction Autobiography Historical Fiction Traditional Literature Science Fiction There is an individual genre reference page included as well! ALSO INCLUDED..., the individual reference page is great to help young children learn to choose a variety of books and it is simple and easy for them to use. I print enough copies for the entire class in color. I then put the reference page into a sheet protector that goes into a durable, plastic folder for each child. (I keep the folders with the reference pages for next year's class so I don't have to copy from year to year)... The students refer to this page when they write down the names of books that they have read. They also graph their reading so they can see if they tend to read from the same genre too much or if they do a good job of reading a variety of materials. It is also a good way for me to monitor their reading and allows me to make suggestions based on what they have read. If you like this item, please rate it and give me a vote! Fishbowl Discussion Teacher Organization Tool

Fishbowl Discussion Teacher Organization Tool

ou may know, I've been moved to a 3rd grade gifted and talented classroom. I wasn't so sure about it at first, but I have to say I am loving it! I love the discussions we have and using a fishbowl really gets the kids talking about the text or other issues. It is so beneficial because I am there listening and taking notes to check for understanding and deeper thinking. It has also helped the kids run their own book clubs because they are used to having discussions. I was just drawing a circle and dividing it up, but I invariably ended up with too few or too many sections. These pages help with that situation. I have included pages with 8 sections, 10 sections, and 12 sections. There is also a place for the title of the text, the question being discussed, and an information page of how I run fishbowls in my room. Hope this helps keep you organize with your students! Book Bingo with Reading Kids Reward Bookmarks

Book Bingo with Reading Kids Reward Bookmarks

Do your students tend to read the same sorts of books over and over? If they do, then this is the activity for them! This reading bingo game makes reading all sorts of books FUN! Kids read from the different categories to make a BINGO...In the meantime, they are reading a variety of books! Each time the child earns a BINGO, they receive a punch on their reading bookmark. These bookmarks are great to use as a reward system. They have 25 numbered apples on them...5 rows of 5...I use a hole puncher and punch a hole for each BINGO. I do, however, encourage the children to get several BINGOs before handing in the BINGO card. Each time the student gets 5 punches,(1 row)they get a small prize from my prize drawer. When they fill the entire card, they get a BIG prize. :) Check out my other items and my blog! Thanks! Hilary www.rockinteachermaterials.com

Comparative and Superlative Adjectives with -y - Word Sorts

Comparative and Superlative Adjectives with -y - Word Sorts

Word sorts are highly effective in teaching literacy to young students by helping them grasp the meanings and relationships of words. Students use cards with printed words on them and sort them into groups. Sorting pictures gives students a stronger oral language base than looking at the sounds in isolation on a worksheet. They deal with words at a visual level, so they can analyze the speech sounds that go with the pictures. They have a phonological understanding they don't get when just looking at written words and letter combinations. So, get your kids reading better than ever. Alliteration Spinners to Create Sentences and Teach Kids About Alliteration

Alliteration Spinners to Create Sentences and Teach Kids About Alliteration

Included in this pack: *6 spinner pages-letters B, C, D, M, S, T, and a blank 'DIY' spinner *a planning page that helps kids plan their sentence *a page of adjectives that will help kids write their own sentences using alliteration *2 different writing papers for publishing sentences with a place for illustrations *sample pages I am so excited about how well this alliteration activity worked with my kids and they absolutely LOVED it! I decided to do this as a whole class activity, but it could definitely be used in a small group or at stations. Here’s one way to get started in your classroom: Give each child a ‘spinner’ page and paper clip. Kids spin the paper clip to find a 'name', 'who', 'where', 'with what' and 'describing words'. Kids write the words from the spinner in the correct boxes on the ‘sloppy copy’ planning sheet. They then write a sentence using words from the boxes. Have them use describing words to make the sentences more interesting and colorful. I checked the sentences on the sloppy copy and provided a final page for the published sentence. The kids illustrated their sentences and then shared them with the class. I have to say it was a HUGE hit with the kids. I heard "Can I do another one?" over and over again! I know your kids are going to love making these sentences too! Have fun! Hilary
