This resource includes an extract from chapter 6 of 'The Railway Children', a comprehension paper based on the extract which is set out in the same style as the Key Stage 2 Reading SAT, the mark scheme and a grid showing the coverage of the content domains across the questions. Each of the questions follows the same format as those found in the 2016 and 2017 KS 2 Reading SATs so that children can become familiar with the ways in which questions are worded. The resource can be used as a stand alone practice comprehension for the KS 2 SATs or could be used as part of a novel study of 'The Railway Children'.

A Candle in the Dark by Adele Geras is a short historical novel set just before the beginning of World War II. It follows two young Jewish refugees as they escape Germany on the Kindertransport. The pdf booklet provides a range of different activities to develop the comprehension of pupils in years 5/6 including, freeze frame, hot-seating, character on the wall.
