Use a Venn diagram to sort 2D shapes

Use a Venn diagram to sort 2D shapes

This could be used with Year 1 or 2 to build their knowledge of, and vocabulary related to, 2D shapes. Although data handling no longer forms part of the KS1 maths curriculum, this activity gives the children the opportunity to sort and classify shapes and use the appropriate vocabulary. First, use the Powerpoint to identify and name common 2 D shapes before sorting shapes onto a Venn diagram. The resource includes shape pictures for the children (or TA) to cut out, a Venn diagram sheet and a Powerpoint for the introduction.

Question or statement?

Question or statement?

This is an introduction aimed at key stage 1 and linked to the National Curriculum for English (punctuation). Children are taught what a question mark looks like and what it is for before distinguishing between statements and questions. The accompanying worksheets are simple to use, giving the children opportunities to use question marks where needed without having to do a lot of writing to demonstrate their understanding. More able children can read more complex sentences and then progress to composing their own questions to match the answers given. Answer sheets are included.
