Key Stage 3 lesson for a scheme of work on The Rise of The Dictators. In this lesson we look at what life was like for people living in Nazi Germany. We start with an activity called ‘Photos from Nazi Germany’. The pupils try to work out what is going on in the photos and what this tells us about life in Germany at this time. We then look at life for different types of adults, we use an evidence sheet and the pupils make notes about how those people perhaps benefited, or suffered under Nazi rule. We then look at young people. We start by analyzing a school day fro the German school pupil and why the Nazi’s wanted certain subjects to be taught. Key Stage 3 lesson for a scheme of work on The Rise of The Dictators. In this lesson we look at the early problems facing Germany after WWI to set the scene for the rise of the Nazi Party. We then look at the Weimar Golden Years and what Germany was like in the 1920’s. We then track Hitlers early life and look for ‘alarm bells’. These are events in his life that shaped his ideologies or betrayed his wish to be a ruthless dictator. We then look at how the Wall Street Crash played into the Nazi’s hand and the pupils complete a text analysis to learn how Hitler became Chancellor in 1933 and then Fuhrer in 1934. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 1C: In this lesson we look at types of hard engineering and where they are best applied. The starter is a quiz where the pupils need to select the squares that have a depositional landform. There are sound effects too so it’s all very exciting. We begin by looking at why certain areas of the coast need protecting and what factors go into consideration when planners are deciding whether or not to protect the coastline. The pupils are then given some information cards and a worksheet to fill in on the different types of hard engineering, they also have a visual scale to shade in for each one according to it’s effectiveness and durability, cost and sustainability. This can be done in a number of ways (group work, round the room, carousel etc). We then seek to apply this knowledge though the pupils completing a decision making exercise. This is based on a fictional town (Sandytown). The town has been divided into zones, the pupils read the information on each zone and decide what type fo hard engineering that zone needs and justify this. We finish with a 6 mark question on hard engineering with some guidance on how they can answer this. In a nutshell lesson includes: Interactive starter quiz on depositional landforms. Video clip. Hard engineering worksheet with visual scale. Decision making exercise activity. 6-mark GCSE-style question with guidance should the pupils need it. Key Stage 3 lesson for a scheme of work on The Rise of The Dictators. In this lesson we look at the Russian Revolution of 1917 and its causes. We begin by looking at Tsar Nicholas II, we then watch a video clip on the reasons for the Revolution. We use info cards and visual hexagons to examine the causes in more detail. We then look at the rise of the Bolsheviks and the pupils create a scroll through history to explain the events of the rise of Bolshevism. We then introduce Stalin via a video clip and the pupils complete sentences as they watch the clip. We then look at Stalin’s actions as leader and the pupils decide if they are good ideas or bad ideas using a visual indicator scale and explanation. Key Stage 3 lesson for a scheme of work on The Rise of The Dictators. In this lesson we recap on the causes of the Russian Revolution. We then introduce the idea of Communism and Karl Marx’s beliefs. The pupils look at the scenario he envisaged may result in Communism and summarise the stages and draw symbols to represent each stage. We then look at Lenin’s actions to change Russia. The pupils divide his changes into good ideas and bad ideas and explain why. We then look at how much the West feared communism in a ‘thermometer’ analyis. The pupils have to justify how much the governments of Western democracies feared communism at that time. We finish with a ‘to what extent’ question. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 2A: In this lesson we look at the increasing number of the global population living in urban areas. We start with a quick quiz on global populations and a video to put global population increase into context for the pupils. We then look at how urbanisation varies around the world by plotting data on a graph. The pupils then describe the trends they have found. We then look at a map of the urban populations around the world and the pupils can tackle several different questions depending on ability. We then discuss how these patterns might be explained. We then answer a GCSE-style question looking at the percentage of people living in urban areas on different continents using a bar chart. The pupils have guidance on how to answer the question if needed. We finish with a plenary quiz where the pupils have to find the countries with an urban population of over 50%. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 2A: In this lesson we look at the economic challenges in Lagos with special attention paid to the informal economy and the Olusosun Landfill site. We use elaborative questioning on a photo of rubbish collectors at Olusosun as a starter, the pupils may be able to work out that the rubbish tip employs informally, many people. We then look at the employment structure of Lagos, and how it compares with Nigeria. The pupils will be plotting their own pie charts and answering questions relating to them. We then look at the formal and informal economies. Focusing on the informal economy and the Olusosun landfill site, pupils look at the problems and benefits of working on the landfill site, there are 2 video clips to support this. AQA GCSE history lesson on the actions taken to end WWI. We start with a simple true or false retrieval practice quiz. We then have a recap of the Hundred Days Offensive with some questions. We then use a thermometer analysis to look at increasing problems for Germany and the pupils explain why they have given the ratings that they have and explain what the most serious issues for Germany were. We then look at the events of the signing of the armistice and the pupils look at the terms of the agreement. They record how the German public would react to the terms of the armistice and explain why. We then compare two sources from General Hindenburg and the pupils look for and explain differences. We then finish the lesson with a video clip and a task to see to what extent the terms of the armistice were too harsh on Germany. This could be done as a simple show of hands or a full written task. We then look at the U-boat threat in detail, firstly by looking at the design and function of the U-boats and then by watching a video clip where the pupils answer questions about how they were used. The pupils then consider how the British responded to the threat and what innovations were adopted. We then progress to look at the sinking of the Lusitania and the pupils complete a tensionometer to record the rising tensions between the USA and Germany. We look at a source “Destroy this Mad Brute” and the pupils answer questions. There are two plenary options to assess the impact or potential impact of America entering the war. We then have a brief recap of the situation for all sides at the beginning of 1918 and the reasons why Ludendorff felt a major offensive was the only option. We then have a brief recap of the events of the failed Ludendorff Offensive and Germany’s precarious position. We then look at Foch’s plan for the offensive in a video clip and the pupils think about Germany’s preparedness for the offensive. We then follow events in a series of event slides. The pupils read the information on the board and record the German army’s level of control at that point on the Western Front. This could be done as a round the room or carousel activity. The pupils reflect on what the critical events were. We then use a source comparison question as consolidation and finish with the pupils writing a bio-poem to General Ludendorff. We start the lesson with a photo mystery around a hydro-electric dam, we use this as a way to start discussing what dams have to do with increasing water supply. The pupils then go on to use a foldable template to look at four different ways that water supply can be increased. The pupils will also create separate sections for examples of dams & reservoirs and also water transfers. We then look at the global pattern of desalination.
